Well...US is owned by AAL now...and them's the rules.

Question: Flight tomorrow was fairly open when listed wife as D2 and checked her in (again, for a flight tomorrow). Looks as though flights are filling up. Can I cancel her PNR for that flight tomorrow and then list her as a D1 to increase her chances, or is that pass abuse. I understand if you were at the gate waiting, but a flight in 24 hours.

I think I have done it before without any repercussions. I think!

Bump....Guess everyone is as ignorant to the rule as I am!  I'm going for it... B)

Not sure AANOTOK.
I've canceled a PNR after check in (on the CPU) and upgraded within the 24 hours notice. From D2 to D1 without repercussions. Like I said though... I'm not sure as I am not as travel rule savvy as some.

I coul be worng here, but since at the moment they are still 2 different airlines, owned by the same parent company, I would not see a problem there.  Should be no different than say going to LAS, AA is looking bad, but listed anyway, holding a ZED and listed also on DL and B6 both leaving after AA as back up.  I have done this with no issues from any of the 3 carriers.
Nothing wrong with that, that is just demonstrating smart travel. Save the unused ZED. And use it towards a trip another day.

Thanks BigMac, as I said, I believe I have too without any negative response. I did find this earlier in the thread though from jimntx:

"I do know that the company tracks such things as--
1. You list and check-in for a flight as a D2 (let's say 24 hours prior to departure). You are departing from a hub (say DFW or ORD).
2. As the hours progress, you see D2Ts checking in who will be through passengers at the hub and will go ahead of you in priority.
3. You cancel your D2 listing, re-list and check-in as a D1. This is a BIG no-no. I know because I did it when I was commuting to STL, not knowing that it was illegal. When I got to the gate, the agent asked me if I was sure I wanted to use that D1 or go back to D2 status and take my original place in line. This particular agent let me know that it was a violation and she would have to report it, if I insisted on using the D1. I went back to D2. Didn't get on the flight, but I still have my job and my travel benefits. So, there is some ability to track booking history for non-revs--even cancelled listings."

Pay attention to your ZED tickets if you do not use them. They have expiration dates for refunds. I believe it is 90 days. If you do not get a refund then use it or lose it.

Thanks everyone - also confirmed with help desk that non-rev listing on AA and zed listing on US on the same day is OK.  As it turned out I didn't need the ZED... but it was very close!

If you do it before the 24 hr check in, it's should be ok.
If done After you checked in as a D2, that would be a problem.

I am retired PDT. I will need to go to Amarillo in the near future due to a dying friend. I can't list on wings and need info on how do this. Thanks.

Dash log into Wings and check under Travel.  It explains the procedures on how to list Thru MyIDTravel.

That is correct, them is the rules...

The policy AS EXPLAINED in the Q&A:

'I just read with disbelief that the non-rev policy will be based upon check-in time. The entire airline business is based upon seniority, and even though American never changed from decades ago, this is a fabulous time to make things right. By using check-in time, regardless of hire date, will only cause a loss of sleep as everyone tries to list at the first available minute. What sense does it make that a new hire gets on board ahead of a 30 year employee? I am severely disappointed at the announcement and I hope that it is reconsidered. In this case, as was the case in the America West/US Airways merger, we decided to go with the larger airline's process. The current process for legacy American works very well and has ample checks in place for minimizing fraud. We made very concerted efforts to take positive parts of both policies to create something better, recognizing that either way the boarding priority went, 1/3 of the new airlines' employees would be unhappy or 2/3 of the new airlines' employees would be unhappy. The reduced fees for travel and the new pricing for First Class (to be rolled out later this year) are positives to be considered as well. There is some good to be had for all, and some perhaps less ideal, depending on which legacy airline you come from, and we will have integration decisions like this throughout the next two years."

The whining is getting old.......
