Closing of West Coast Cities

I see that there are schedule reductions planned for LAX and SFO--I don't necessarily like that at all. Yesterday I was involuntarily rerouted due to cancellation of 172 SNA-PHL. The great folks at Chairman's called AND paged me well before departure time (THANK YOU). ALL flights from LAX were oversold yet they got me on 18 at 12:20!

It seems the demand is there.

I agree that the issue with the 757 is related more to US than the aircraft. However the 757's on the property now are pretty old, so I guess the maintenance is an issue--also reducing to 8 F class seats makes it an undesirable airplane for transcon from a frequent flier's perspective.

I am not sure of the economics, but wouldn't a daily turn PHL-LAX or SFO by the A330 make some sense? Increasing capacity without increasing frequency, and more than doubling cargo capacity SEEMS like it could make money, and could have beneficial results pertaining to aircraft utilization. It seems since crews are paid the same as 767 scale now (correct me if I am wrong), that the 330 could make money transcon. But then again, just because something makes sense, it guarantees this management WON'T do it.

In either case, I had also heard indirectly from upper management that there will be no station eliminations re the coast as well.

The question is now that US is moving SFO operations to UA, what is happening with LAX? I heard that one of the UA international lounges will become the US Air club at SFO, and there is a rumor of the same at LAX. Does anyone have any info regarding that?

The 757 as an aircraft is not expensive to operate, it is US's costs to operate the plane that make the Airbus better for transcon...

Art,
Actually, the pilot's and f/a's are paid at international rates for every flight the A330 flies. The pilot's contract only has international A330 scales, so therefore the f/a's have a me-too clause that states they will get international rates if any other crew members do. A couple years ago the A330 went to Miami and everyone got international pay. So, I don't think that a/c is too economical to run to the west coast.

PSA1979,

Can you please say who at AFA gave you this sensitive information that you posted? This came out of Pref bid yesterday. BUT NO ONE AT AFA MEC RELEASED THIS.

Please explain.

The memo states that it is TO: Inflight staff from the VP of Inflight.

It was not even sent to AFA.

I thought the A330 was too big for the current space US uses at T1 in LAX. Not sure about SFO, though. But, as others have said, if the pay scales are significantly higher for crew, then it's not likely to happen anyway.

Regarding LGA, I don't recall there ever being perimeter rule exemptions. Slot exemptions for new routes, yes, but not distance exemptions.

That's what I thought, but some maintain that there is a procedure. U is able to offer the LGA-SJU flight... but that's a Saturday only. The Fed's may not be watching.

You are correct in assuming that there is no space for the 330 at LAX's T1 with the current configuration. A move to T6 or T7, both United Terminals with widebody gates, would allow them to send the 330.

I am so scared, you know who I am. Get a life and quit taking money from AFA so you can sit around and post on this board. At least I do it for free!!!

You won't see a 330 going to LAX, we don't have enough widebodies that if one breaks all xxxx breaks lose. We only have nine of them, none to spare on a domestic route, the only domestic is PHL-SJU-PHL then off to LGW.

Expect US & UA to colocate and/or share facilites in LAX, just like in SAN, SFO, & SEA.

Best regards,

Chip
