China Flights- will it happen ?

but this IS NOT in the best interest of the city.

oh my goodniss, one lousy flight 18 months from now--please....we're gonna go here, we're gonna go there....this management team is famous for its gonna's...it can't even handle the operation it currently and now it is going to argue over gates for imaginary flights on imaginary planes....OKAAAAAAY

Since I don't fly to Moscow or Beijing regularly, I'll take the SAT and AUS flights thank you. And anyone who did fly Beijing or Moscow regularly would fly another carrier.

That is just a terribly ignorant and appalling answer. Are you from Pennsylvania? If you are, the economy will gain a tremendous amount from a wide range of international destinations. Foreign investment, joint ventures, headquarters, etc., will all be more attractive to locate in Philadelphia. Can the same gains come about by 2 more flights to Saint Louis? Not hardly. What the city is doing is not in its best interest or that of its citizens and shows that the elected officials are not following through with their fiduciary responsibilities to their constituents.

Phxflyer ignore US1yfare- just another Burgher pissed that their city is sliding into oblivion. All your comments are spot on. Unless your from Pit and you dont know where Moscow or Beijing is located

They don't need US...someone else will come in and replace them. US needs PHL more. How naive you are. That kool-ade has rotted your brain. I think you really believe that US is doing PHL a favor by flying the China route. And, yes, I live in PHL. If you knew anything, you'd know that the problem with PHL is its tax structure (e.g., gross receipts tax) and corruption, not that US can't get gates to fly to Moscow, China and Tel Aviv. One lousy China flight is not going to change the city of PHL. And one lousy China flight on a lousy carrier such as US is not going to make or break the city.

No that is naive. PHL needs US. No one is going to come in and fly PHL-China...or Moscow or Istanbul or any of those destinations for that matter. Will someone come in a replace them the same way that after US dropped over 400 flights in PIT, a new carrier rushed in to make it a hub?

One lousy China flight is not going to change the city of PHL.

If it is sooooo inconsequential for a city, like you suggest, then why do 1000s of supporters write to the DOT when these routes are being awarded begging for their city to get the award? Why is Spector so up in arms if he shouldn't care. You are dead wrong

Comparing PIT to PHL is like comparing PHX to LAX.

Don't get me wrong, that type of service is great on a number of levels, but the city won't live or die with or without it.

Yes, I am sure that if US left, no one would step in with all of that O&D market.   Until US beefed up PHL, UA was flying DC-10's and 767's out of PHL. AA was flying widebodies as well. US screwed the business travelers for years in PHL, but at least it was a predictable operation and they treated their business customers well. Now, Tempe has turned it into a cluster f*** and thinks that they are owed the world because they are going to be flying people to China on non-existent planes in 18 months. They barely made it through the summer and now they want everything handed to them. By the way, did that Munich flight ever depart or are the people still waiting in the boarding area waiting for an announcement?

1. This is a bluff which the city has already called, based on what the press is reporting (the best quote was "the threat drew jeers from city officials" if memory services). US will not walk away from a government protected monopoly route to the fastest growing economy in the world. Won't happen. Dougweiser and Scotch know it, the city knows it, the state knows it.

2. Those of you who have been around the boards for some time will recall that I told you that screwing PIT would come back to bite US in the hindquarters at PHL. Told ya. No help from the state or federal delegations on this, now or ever.

3. 30-40 additional flights to anywhere is better than 1 flight to China. Businesses in PHL cannot afford to ignore China--they've been flying there on other airlines already. Chinese interests can't ignore PHL. The economic impact stuff is bunk, especially since US won't can the China flight.

4. If they keep talking like this, Maxjet is liable to whisper something to the DOT and start a war over reallocation of the frequency, as they would be right to do. US has the gates at PHL to run the China flight.

5. US won't move international services ex-PHL to CLT. CLT lacks the O&D to make them work, else they'd be flying from CLT to begin with. US needs the runs out of PHL over the pond with no competition--retreating to noncompetitive routes is a key plank in Dougweiser's plan. That, and I'm wondering if the 757s can make some of the destinations out of CLT (I've not looked at the distances involved).

6. US only has a gate problem at PHL in the summer. In the winter, it's not an issue. And, before someone goes on about the economic impact of those flights, they are seasonal, presumably because of the holiday traffic that goes with them. I'm not moving my business to PHL if I can't take the BCN flight in the winter.

7. The new mayor won't be in office in time to stop the actual move, and once DL is moved, that's it. They won't be heading back. Looks like DoUgIe was pimp-slapped by Delta, again.

In short--lots of bluff and BS out of Tempe, but nothing really to see here. US will take what PHL gives them and like it, since US needs PHL much worse than PHL needs US.

Threatening the China frequency was probably the dumbest f'ing thing Dougweiser will do this year, and that's saying a lot.

What a great thread.

PHL tells Doug to take a long walk off a short pier.

You just wait, PHL will work if enough managers, directors and VPs are fired.

Even the beneficiaries of ignorance have had too much stupidity

No that is naive. PHL needs US. No one is going to come in and fly PHL-China...or Moscow or Istanbul or any of those destinations for that matter.

Let's see here - not sure the PHL needs US this much - Air Tran stopped their PHL - BOS flights - while they were still flying - the one way fare on US was $109 - guess what it is now - $475 - yes - PHL really needs US! Once again the customer is screwed by US. Some LCC carrier.

And as far as the international routes go - you seem to forget that for anyone that lives in NorthEast Phila, other areas north and west of the city, and many people in NJ - Newark is just as close as PHL, or in some cases even closer. So why endure an 8 or more hour flight on a joke of an airline with lousy service on a cramped dirty airplane that serves a stale donut wrapped in plastic for "pre arrival service" when you can go to Newark and fly a real airline? Yes, if I'm taking a flight to Chicago it probably doesn't make sense to go to Newark to do so, but if I'm flying to Europe or even farther distances than an extra 45 minutes to the airport for a real airline isn't that big of a deal.

To think that PHL "needs US" is laughable!

Though he's not mentioned, I wouldn't doubt Rendell is also involved in the "PHL Gate Affair".

He's definitely involved. At the CLT pilots' meeting in September, Doogie said he had just come from PHL where he met with Rendell and Street over the "PHL Gate Affair." He mentioned that Rendell was supportive, and Street was "not so." That's my own characterization of what he said; if you have access, you can see it on the Hub.

Of course, this was all before the PIT pulldown, so Rendell may very well have changed his opinions in the matter.
