American Airlines Seeks Recall Of Laid-Off Workers

But we know there was $153 mil on january 10. We don't know what happened after that.
That may be, but I cannot find anything in writing with that that dollar amount on it. Nor can I find any TWA Board Member making that kind of statement. I have had many converstions with former TWA'ers that I used to work with on this subject and all have said that the company was not in danger of collapse, yet it was one day from doing just that. I don't know if the financial health of TWA was better than stated, or if it was just wishful thinking on the part of the employees. But in the end, as a native AAer, I was the one that got screwed.

The BOD member sent a signed certified letter to that effect to Senator Anne Hutchinson. And pray tell how did you get screwed?

all have said that the company was not in danger of collapse, yet it was one day from doing just that.

I understood that the choreography for the acquisition was years in the making and AA orchestrated a brilliant plan of shedding what they didn't want (we closed stations overseas before 01) TWA participated by perfectly timing the bank balance from no danger to a BK balance designed to force Congress into quickly stamping the AA offer 'to save TWA' . I remember in December, the month before the announcement, we were told we were getting some new uniform items, free, and there were some other unexpected improvements. I said to my husband "Wow, we must be doing well, they are throwing money around" Looking back, that was one of the ways we rapidly reduced our carefully watched budget to what was needed to get Congress to believe we were desperate. Remember also, the 'last chance to retire with lump sums' that ended Dec 31st, a week before the announcement? Another example of getting rid of hundreds of top, senior salaries.

Thank you for the insight. No one has ever explained what was going on at that time to me like you have.

Simple. I was with AA when the merger happened. Yet, I was one of the first ones out the door with TWA people staying. That's right. My seniority was screwed by the arbitrator.

<_< -------- You know, we've been been over this ground before. Maybe it is because as exTWA employees, we lived through these times. We saw Compton handing out $100.00 bonus for "on time performance", right up to the end! Now some people say, if Compton only wanted to dump money, all he had to do was dump it into the retirement fund! Well,------- It just so happens Uncle Carl Ichon was still on the hook for our retirement up tell the end! That would be the last thing he'd do!!!

I find your explanation a bit mystifing. All the TWA F/As were furloughed, 2/3 of TWA pilots were furloughed, most agents were let go. So what really happened?

I can guess! Joe was a AMT, or FSC, at a Station where Kasher gave exTWA people seniority. Even 25%, in most cases, was enough to bump some nAAtives to the street! Am I right? ----- It's what AA management would call "Calateral Damage!" Both exTWA, and nAAtives alike!

You are correct sir. However, I chose to take the street on the third round. As it turns out, it was a good decision on my part. I'll admit, I was bitter at the time. But it worked out in the end. So, I thank AA, TWA and Kasher. No more turning wrenches on airplanes for me.

<_< ------ Well Joe, I'm glad things turned out O.K. for you! This isn't the same Industry I started out with some 35+ years ago! I feel it's getting less, and less, attractive for new up and coming AMT's. May be a problem for Airlines in the future.

I agree with you 100%. I have worked in all aspects in aviation and I will say one thing, all of aviation has changed, not just the airlines. I also believe the airlines are going to have problems attracting new people in the future in light of the employee abuse that has occured over the last 8 years. When no one wants to work for the airlines, it is then and only then, will things begin to change. I loved my job as an AMT and do miss it. But, I don't miss the B.S.

<_< -------- Good news today! I heard that AA will be recalling another batch of twenty people, and a third of eighteen! That's on top of the fifty letters out now! For a total of eighty eight here at MCI! It's getting harder to find a good parking spot! Which is O.K. by me!

The industry being less attractive to new blood is something I'm all for helping out with.

I run into kids occasionally due to my sideline that have some aspirations about the glamorous airlines career - I do everything in my power to discourage them.

There's a cycle we'll have to go through to get the good things back into the trade. I just wish it didn't have so much to do with the safety and integrity of the aircraft flying about.

Have you heard when the numbers after the orginal 50 will go out?
