I think AS only has stations in AK staffed because the economic environment is such that a vendor can’t provide cost savings or possibly to curry favor for political reasons. Either way, as the company’s network becomes relatively less exposed to state of Alaska and more centered around lower 48, HI, Mexico, and Caribbean I wonder if McGee will work out a scheme to go after the AK state stations.

The iam members are in 6 small alaska stations on islands. The members sued the iam for signing a letter with management that forced them to work 16 hours straight straight shifts with no overtime. The iam teamed with management attorneys and won the lawsuit i believe. Management flies in the iam employees for 2 week gigs then flies them back out for 2 weeks off. Judge ruled that the state overtime law could be superceded if the union has a deal with the company.

Here is the case. The only reason why alaska airline has the iam is to create pink dog contracts that allow the company to do slave labor and circumvent strong labor law.
