AA fires WWII Vet

This IS NOT aviation related nor rule 32. This is just a way cool story I stumbled across and wanted to share with my fellow veterans

<_< ------- Hey Frank, I like your "avatar' !--------- For all those non- Navy types, it's the rating badge of a Navy Aircraft Mechanic! Mine was crossed hammers, with wings.

That was my job - Jet Engine Mechanic - ADJ.

Whe the Navy first started the aircraft engine mechanic rating, the abbreviation was AD. With the advent of turbines, the rating was split to ADJ (Jet/Turbine) and ADR (Reciprocating/Round Motors). Since there are no more Round Motors in service, the rating has been returned to its original form - AD.

Re: your rating - S, E, or H?

<_< ------- Technically "S", but I ended up doing it all. I changed more hydrolic pumps, torqued more tailhooks, than patched bullet wholes.

<_< ------- Hey, I know this is off topic, but this is what it's all about for me! Enjoy!!! http://www.neptunuslex.com/2010/12/10/good-day-at-the-patch/

<_< --------"It needs to stop!"------- Why!?------ Is it an embarrassment to the Company? ------- I damn sure hope it is!!! And who the hell are you to judge when a person should, or shouldn't, drastically change his life style!?

Thank you MCI, I couldn't have said it better myself. I never understood the arrogance of some of my union brothers when it came to a fellow older worker that stayed past 55.

WWII ended 65 1/2 years ago. Freddy is 82. My father is 83 and was too young to serve in WWII. Was Freddy like Audy Murphy, lied about his age when he enlisted? What is Freddy's war record?

The whole "was he old enough" thing was debated already. I'm a skeptic. He might have volunteered while the war was underway, but I don't quite buy the combat story.

I'd love to see a DD-214 or have his Army serial number to check against enlistment records, but I doubt that will ever happen. It's not like he's running for office...

For fun, I did a search on WW-II enlistment records (public info) for the years 1926 thru 1929, and came up with one Fred A Schmitt from Suffolk County, which might be the same guy.

He enlisted in June 1945, so it's unlikely anyone saved his ass in combat, because IIRC, combat in the Pacific for the Army had pretty much wound down by the time he would have finished basic training.

The other Fred, Fredrick, Frederick etc names. came from different parts of the country, but he could be one of them, too.

Here's the list I found:
