From announcement today:

MORE THAN 1,400 PILOTS RESPOND TO NORTHWEST AIRLINES’
NEW RECRUITMENT PROGRAM IN FIRST TWO WEEKS

EAGAN, Minn. – (August 8, 2007) – Northwest Airlines (NYSE: NWA) today announced a strong response to the carrier’s call to commence pilot hiring. More than 1,400 pilots have applied to join Northwest, including more than 1,000 applications in the first eight days after the new recruitment was announced on July 24.

Looks like there are a lot of pilots lining up for chance to work for NWA. Kind of makes you wonder about all of the rhetoric being tossed around about how intolerable it is to be a pilot at NWA now. Supply and demand (I.E., there is a lot of supply willing to work under current conditions) would dictate that the existing pilots have nothing to complain about.

Or maybe it will just look good on their resume....
At least they will be trained.
swish...is that the sound of a revolving door?

Maybe 1400 bottom feeders realize this is there only chance at flying for a major.

Remember, NWA had 1500 scabs who took jobs. None of whom were qualified to get hired before the mechanics struck the carrier.

Now it is the pilots turn to get to ride next to the lower class while riding on scab maintained aircraft; a true double header.

Enjoy your pass "privileges" finman.

Application 'counts' mean very little unless the count only includes ‘qualified’ applicants.
I could apply to be a pilot as well but it doesn’t imply that I’m qualified.

I guess at least you guys spread your hatred around. It's pretty amazing to me the things you guys are saying about these pilots, a large percentage who served proudly and courageously for our country, that are taking this oppurtunity to work for a major carrier. "bottom feeders" and "pimple faced kids"? You guys really need to get a grip and think about the people that you are taking shots at. Despite you're preconcieved notions, this is still a very much sought after job that pays very well relative to other pilot careers.

bottom line is jobs are hard to come by and if you are a pilot why not apply?? i don't think these 1400 people care about what happened in the past??

It's the first time since 2000 that NWA has hired new pilots, so I think it's very good news for the pilot profession that jobs at majors are starting to open up again. I don't think these new hires would be any less qualified than the new hires that were brought on in 1999 and 2000, do you? Also, what makes you think that none of the 1500 replacements were "qualified" to be hired as new hires. You'll have to provide some evidence of that.

I do very much enjoy my pass priveleges. I get to see my family, and they get to come see me, much more often than otherwise would be possible. It probably saves me and my family close to $10k every year. It is still a very valuable benefit of working here. Are you impying that it's not a privelage any more?

I think the point being raised it that "anyone" could be in that 1400 number; be it someone *very* qualified, right down to someone with a very very little time. Like others have mentioned, what the heck, why not apply?

I have to disagree with you here (big suprise, I know). Maybe out of a hub it's nice, but from anywhere else, it's not worth the headache. I can count on one hand the times I've non revved in the last 5 years, and would have fingers to spare. The Celebration & Skyteam passes were nice, though....

Also, do mgmt. employees still always travel on a "3?"

Right on about that Kev. Also the headache about trying to get home. Your always watching the waitlist. Things look doable and then on the night before the return trip - all these non-revs come out of nowhere.

Lets see...1400 applied but how many are actually qualified? Misleading again.

Come on Jenny, we both know that they all met the minimum qualifications, which were quite high by the way. If they did not qualify, NWA did not accept their applications.

Boob, why don't you go back and read the anoucenment again? No where does it state that they were all qualifed. Nor does it say that nwa accepted or rejected any appliciations. It only says that over 1400 have applied. Much like finny, twisting turning the facts to fit your mindset that this is a great company and people are just dying to for it. Wrong. Wonder what would happen if lets say UPS put out an add for pilots? Or Fed Ex? Oh that's right they already have over 10,000 app's on file, no need advertise.

Big loser,
I am not getting my info from the announcement. I don't know what would happen with UPS of Fedex and neither do you. But I do know that all 1400 applicants met the minimums which were well advertised. Never said it was a great company and that people were dying to work for it did I? I am just stating a fact, as I know it.
If you can't accept that, then move on.

Oh, I am all warm and fuzzy now that you have all the info. Moved on long ago. Why don't you? This is just the latest in the nwa fiasco. There will be many more the fodder never ends. What will the next one be?
