Wisconsin

Good teachers are worth every penny they deserve. But unfortunately because of the teachers unions you have subpar teachers churning out subpar students on premium pay on the tax payers dime. That's why I never enrolled my daughter in a public school. I would rather spend my own money on an educator who is accountable to me not a union.

So, instead of focusing on generalized statements about them being "overpaid," why not do what I noted, and help focus the discussion on what we as a society demand of them, and how we can compensate them accordingly?

BTW, I my son is in public school, and the quality of instruction is amazing. I absolutely feel like I am receiving my $$$'s worth.

It is absolutely about the lack of respect educators get from society. Look at the way you couldn't help but use the term "overpaid" in your last post. Tell us: What do you think a teacher should make, given the importance of their job to this nation's future?

We need a poll....

Find out if Americans are willing to pay more taxes for Union teachers who get pretty much double the wages and benefits than those in the private sector.

What exactly is the private sector that these public teachers are being compared too?

(sigh)

last time: These protests are almost w/o exception peaceful.

GOP Lawmaker Michelle Litjens Speaks Out After Death Threat From Wisconsin Dem Rep

Wisconsin GOP Representative Michelle Litjens appeared on Fox News today to discuss the death threat she received following Friday’s vote on Governor Scott Walker’s budget recovery bill. Dem Rep. Gordon Hintz threatened Litgens after Friday’s Assembly vote. Hintz screamed at Litgens, “You are F***king dead!”

Recall efforts were initiated against 7 of the 14 AWOL democrats hiding out in Illinois.

JS Online reported:

The clock is now running for groups trying to collect enough signatures to trigger recall elections against seven Democratic senators, state officials said today.

Reid Magney, spokesman for the Government Accountability Board, said local groups have officially registered recall committees with his agency to try to recall Sen. Bob Wirch of Kenosha and Jim Holperin of Eagle River.

In addition, a Utah group, American Recall Coalition, has registered electronically to set up recall committees against Wirch and five other Senate Democrats – Lena Taylor of Milwaukee, Mark Miller of Monona, Julie Lassa of Stevens Point, Fred Risser of Madison and Dave Hansen of Green Bay.

Magney said his office is still waiting to receive paper registrations from American Recall Coalition but that the out-of-state group may begin collecting signatures for the recall elections in those districts.

“We thought we were going to have a quiet time after the election,” Magney said. “Apparently not.”

The only Democratic senator who is not currently the subject of a recall bid is Spencer Coggs of Milwaukee.

The groups need about 16,000 signatures to force a recall election for a senator, Magney said. The exact number will vary from 11,000 to 21,000 signatures, he said, depending on how many votes were cast in the 2010 governor’s race in the targeted district.

What exactly is the private sector that these public teachers are being compared too?

USA Today just released analysis that may cause a backlash against public unions. The findings? In 41 states, public employees “earn higher average pay and benefits” than private workers in each respective state.

The paper reports:

The analysis of government data found that public employees’ compensation has grown faster than the earnings of private workers since 2000. Primary cause: the rising value of benefits.

Wisconsin is typical. State, city and school district workers earned an average of $50,774 in wages and benefits in 2009, about $1,800 more than in the private sector. The state ranked 33rd in public employee compensation among the states and Washington, D.C. It had ranked 20th in 2000.

Among the key findings:

• California. Public employee compensation rose 28% above the inflation rate from 2000 to 2009 to an average of $71,385 in 2009.

• Nevada. Government employees earned an average of $17,815 more — or 35% — than private workers, the nation’s biggest pay gap. The state’s low-paying private jobs in tourism were the cause, says Bob Potts of the Center for Business and Economic Research at University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

• Texas. The state ranked last in benefits for public employees. The state hasn’t granted cost-of-living increases to most retirees since 2001.

Inconvenient truth:

Even under Walker's bill,

WI's public sector unions

would have more

negotiation powers

and rights

than their

federal counterparts.

Isn't it true something like 1 million Fed employees don't have collective bargaining rights?
They seem to do pretty good with out them.

Labor Sec publically sends shout to labor unions. Imagine if a GOP Labor Sec did the same for Gov. Walker. http://bit.ly/fAytoi'

Similar recall efforts afoot against 8 (I think?) Republicans as well.

Walker is currently delivering his budget address as I write this... Adopting a concilitaory tone early?

May you live in interesting times, right?
Yes it is.

I know, pretty frackin comical ain't it? The organized labor landscape has a long well documented history of corruption, violence, illegal vote buying, etc. For those here trying to paint a different story is grade A...BS!

Like the Gooberment.
I agree, lets abolish unions beginning with the biggest blood sucker my union dues have ever seen. The “United States of America”. This “UNION” has been sucking the life out of us without representation. If we don’t pay their union dues, they take everything we have and at times, put us in debtor’s prison. If we can’t get rid of these blood suckers, let’s at least make it an open shop where I don’t have to pony up my pay to support an oligarchic, aristocratic bunch of thieves and lairs!
