Isnt the RDU-LGW under contract for a 777, or at least a 3 cabin airplane?
[post="292084"][/post]

Don't believe there was ever a contract for a specific aircraft type, but I do recall hearing that Glaxo's contract is contingent on having a nonstop with business class.

The only reason RDU had a 777 on it was the equipment routing... it allows an aircraft and crew to run DFW-LGW-RDU-LGW-DFW, and avoids the need to deadhead a crew in/out of RDU and to run a positioning flight from ORD or DFW.

That little problem was caused by AA. F/A's are still based there and AA chose to move the pilots out.

I am always shocked that we still have RDU-I. After SEA and SJU being axed.

Imagine the havoc this will cause in a 1 flight a day base. People who bid the same day the same position month after month. All of a sudden a different plane. and 2 less people to work each day of the week.

Flight attendants and change, not a good combination. LOL

Also, if you've got CO flying EWR-DEL right across the river, why fight with CO over that if you can run it from a market which is relatively untouched?

In what borough does JFK sit? Queens.

How many tens of thousands of Indians live in guess where? Queens.

So instead of marketing to them the conveinence of flying literally right out of their backyards in Queens, we dismiss that market altogether and basically surrender it to Continental.

Not to mention the cargo revenue we're passing up.

But you're right, ORD makes much more sense, after all there are so many more Indians living in Chicago than New York...

Hate to break it to you, but there's an entire country full of people west of the Hudson river.

Apparently AI also thinks Chicago is worth serving directly, since they're already operating ORD-LHR-DEL once a week (they run JFK-LHR-DEL daily). TW770 used to operate ORD-LHR-BOM once a week, so there's definitely a market for India from the midwest.

AA's done pretty well building ORD into its primary hub for Europe, and with limited frequencies available to India, this was seen as the better choice.

Add to that the large number of Indian nationals who can connect to just about anywhere from the Chicago gateway.

Air India flies to Chicago six times weekly. ORD-LHR-DEL weekly, as you mentioned, as well as ORD-LHR-BOM 2x weekly and ORD-FRA-BOM 3x weekly.

Air India also flies EWR-CDG-India,daily with 744's, & Lax-FRA-India with 777,ex -UA; 3 times weekly.

So what did we spend $1.5 billion on the new JFK terminal for?

36 mainline gates for 67 daily departures?

Seems like a waste to have done that if ORD is going to be the primary European hub.

Is this not the largest air market in the United States?

If we're just going to continue to go back and forth to LA and SFO, throw in some Caribbean flying, and a few internationals we could've merely renovated the existing facilities instead of building a new one.

Speaking of building, has anyone in corporate real estate been taken outside and shot for that boondoggle in MIA?

AMR just *Had* to be calling the shots on that one, couldn't let professionals handle it.They did such a good job running it, it's a billion over budget and years behind schedule and to top it all off the major contractors pulled up the stakes and bailed.

Well, you ain't the only one asking that question. But, it is no justification for putting every single new International route through JFK.

While ORD has the 777 to NRT & LHR they also have many small planes to peoria and similar commumities. JFK's only 67 departures are mainly "flagship" widebody flights. Lax, SFO, SJU, SDQ, GRU, EZE, 6 to LHR, daily to Tokyo, a few feeders with A300 to Miami and countless Caribean flights. No ORD and only 1 DFW. JFK departures are impressive because of the yield they carry and the destinations served. 67 flights doesn't sound right to me, American Eagle must be missing from that number.

That is because he is referring to mainline gates and departures. AE has its own gates.

Somehow I suspect the real target market for ORD-DEL is not Indians going to visit friends & relatives as much as it will be business traffic coming to the US and vice versa.

Thus, how many Indians there are in Queens is probably a moot point....

I think there are good points from both sides of the "discussion"

Being VERY partial to JFK(America's REAL #1 airport), it would be a great thing if there was enough traffic to DEL to warrent ns service from JFK as well(despite CO).

Like EVERYTHING ELSE AT AA
