Southwest attendants protest contract talks

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Flight attendants from Southwest Airlines are touring airports to tell passengers about turbulence in talks to settle a new labor contract with the carrier.

About two dozen of Southwest's 7,200 flight attendants picketed outside San Antonio International Airport Tuesday on the first day of their "Tough LUV Tour." LUV is the Dallas-based airline's symbol on the New York Stock Exchange.

Among their complaints are lack of pension and retirement insurance plans, and what they call a requirement unique among major carriers: the attendants clean their plane between flights without pay.

The Transport Workers Union Local 556, which represents the bargaining unit, estimates that the typical Southwest flight attendant works nearly 300 hours a year without compensation. Christine Buggy, a Chicago-based flight attendant, said she worked nearly six hours for free during a three-day shift this week.

Southwest spokeswoman Ginger Hardage disputed the notion of work without pay.

"Our flight attendants are paid by the trip, and the philosophical thinking is that the (ground) duties are included within that pay," she said.

Hardage said Southwest is committed to preserving a cost structure that has allowed it to weather a prolonged industry downturn that devastated many of its rivals. Southwest is the only major U.S. carrier to remain profitable during the prolonged industry downturn that has devastated many of its rivals.

Kevin Onstead, one of the union's negotiators, said flight attendants also are seeking "significant" pay raises, though he wouldn't say how much. He and Buggy say they work substantial overtime to get their pay up to the mid-$30,000 range.

A new flight attendant at Southwest makes about $14,000 per year.

The flight attendants received their last negotiated raise in 2000 as part of a contract that ran through June 2002.

Yea we saw how these unions stood together and took concessions. When is the last time these unions stood together to fight concessions or get raises? NEVER!

Over the last five years has any union- other than AMFA won representation rights for mechanics?

AMFA wished to win over at NWA.

They did.

AMFA wished to win over at SWA right after the Teamsters just brought back an industry leading contract.

They did.

AMFA hopes to win here at AA.

They will.

The fact is that just about the only ones out there advocating the TWU are people on the TWU payroll. Mechanics thoughout the industry are doing what is usually the hardest thing to get people to do- seek change. Along with the AA drive there is also a drive going on at USAIR and Continental. Tell us what other organization offers us the opportunity to join together in one union with all our other fellow mechanics? What could possibly be wrong with that? It seems to me that any true unionist, would encourage us to pursue this goal. Only those who have more to gain by keeping us in this continual decline would feel otherwise. I'll admitt that if we get AMFA it is very unlikely that Randy McDonald will continue to make over $200,000 per year but I'm confident that as the labor movement consolidates and reorganizes in the airline industry we can start to undo the damage that the TWU has done over the last twenty years.

What percentage of TWU members are gone-never to return?

I hear we are down to 29000 total members from 35,000.

So not only did we give up more than anyone else we still lost a large percentage of our workforce.

Thats not even counting the TWA employees who were laid off prior to integration. Counting those guys we have guys who have been laid off going on three years.

IND and OAK were gone under the IAM and the mighty AFL-CIO.

SWA outsourced prior to AMFA coming on the property. The fact is that SWA mechanics have better benifits and make six bucks and hour more than we do.

The TWU understates their outsourcing numbers because unlike other unions they have no intention of fighting for the work.
