He appears to be blunt honest in contrast to others who appear as "too smooth." He has less endearing qualities and is an aggressive SOB. But the honesty is appealing when you have executives you cannot trust.
I am by no means support or want Crandall back. I think though its interesting what he has to offer.
1) A proven track record. In the industry and this airline in particular.
2) He is a known? Entity, Power, SOB, fill in your own word.
3) Employees and managers alike know exactly where they stand with him. Like it or not.
4) His name and reputation would bring in and secure additional dollars, in spite of the current crisis.
5) His public statement about the f/a''s, would win him support. He says he would not seek work rule changes and concessions. But would decrease the ranks by as much as 6,000. If that''s off the 26,000 peak or the 21,000 today I couldn''t say.
6) Tells it like it is, gets the job done.
I have a job because of BC''s expansion in the mid 80''s. There is as much downside to having him back as well. A list I dont want to have to number up to 100.
Here''s a nice quote from a book I read a while back:
"It might be surprising, the relationship that could develop between Lorenzo and our organizatin. For all his faults, Lorenzo is a businessman who has demonstrated he knows how to make money and hw to run a successful company. I can work with Frank Lorenzo"
Spoken by Charlie Bryan. (From the book "Countdown" by Frank Borman)
Now, substitute the word "Crandall" for "Lorenzo" and tell me that the unions would gladly take the medicine that Crandall would prescribe to bring AA back from the abyss. Especially after they see the compensation package it would take to bring the man out of retirement. No doubt that Crandall was one of the greatest airline CEO''s of all time. But he doesn''t have a magic wand to wave and make everything better.
Carty and his gang may not have been lying about the pay packages that just came to light last week, but they sure weren't telling the whole truth. And that has to qualify as one of the biggest public-relations blunders ever.

Yes, I remember reading that quote, and it always struck me as similar to PM Chamberlain''s statements about "Mr. Hitler" upon stepping from that Imperial Airways Lockheed 14 that had just returned to London from Munich in 1938...
Seriously, has "Fang" expressed ANY desire and/or willingness to throw himself back into the fray?
If so, it would be strangely reminiscent of 30 years ago, when C. R. was persuaded to (temporarily) come out of retirement to right an earlier mess left by Messrs. Sadler and Spater...
I predict that Carty will work for AA until mid summer. Than say he started AA on the road to recovery but due to personal reasons he will have to leave the company. (that way he will save face) Then hopefully Crandall steps in
Maybe I am out of the loop, (on OLOA), but I remember us NOT liking Uncle Bob at all when he was here. He perpetuated pitting work groups against each other, when the APFA was negotiating a contract in the early 90's he had flyers passed out to the other work groups stating that we were turning down a 30% pay raise. He had Jane Allen who was the company's negotiator on TV teliing lies left and right. Then he made her our boss! He turned down Dulles airport as a Hub but instead chose RDU and BNA.
He was a good CEO somewhat but do we really want him back? It is akin of remembering an old lover and only remembering the good and forgetting the bad.....

Indeed he has:
Ex-American chief says he''s open to return stint By Trebor Banstetter Star-Telegram Staff Writer
FORT WORTH -Bob Crandall, American Airlines'' fiery former chairman and chief executive, would return to the struggling airline "if they asked me," he said Thursday.
During a lunchtime interview on the CNBC financial cable TV network, Crandall said that the airline''s management "is doing a great job."
But his services are definitely available if needed, he said.
"Anytime anyone at American wants me to do anything, they just have to ask," he said.
Crandall, a longtime American executive who led the airline for 13 years before retiring in 1998, said he was optimistic about the airline''s chances of surviving its financial crisis. But he said steep cuts, particularly in labor costs, are essential.
Although uncertain whether the airline will ultimately avoid bankruptcy, he said the concessions approved this week by union members "gives them a shot."
American and other major carriers have an "enormous cost gap" with low-fare carriers like Southwest Airlines and AirTran Airways, he said.
Crandall insisted that the traditional hub-and-spoke business model used by American and other major airlines -- which he championed as American''s chief executive -- remains viable.
Discount carriers can''t establish true nationwide networks with their point-to-point routes, he said.
"The notion that the hub is obsolete is simply wrong," he said. "If you want to go from Syracuse to Des Moines, you''re going to go by way of a hub."

KCFlyer,
Are you an Employee of AA, and if so, in what job title?
Anyone is entitled to post on any thread but it is most useful to know what someone does for a living when seeking to fully understand their message.

Nope - not an employee of AA...just an outsider who really doesn''t want to see AA go chapter 7. Charlie Bryan said "I can work with Frank Lorenzo", because his feelings toward Borman were perhaps slightly better than most of y''alls feelings toward Carty. Bryan got what he wanted - Borman left. But what he got in return was far worse than he expected.
As I said, Crandall was one of the best CEO''s the airlne industry has ever seen. But you guys seem to forget your feelings about him during the b-scale days. You seem to forget your feelings about him during many other contract negotiations...and those were during the GOOD days..
But now, he''s the guy to save the day...if for no other reason than to get that bastard Carty out of the office. Does this mean that when he comes in and says that Carty didn''t ask for enough, you''ll gladly give it up for him? Does it mean that you''ll gladly overlook the fact that he didn''t take the job for a dollar a year? Does it mean that you''ll feel that he''s entitled to the golden parachute that will undoubtedly be a part of any employement contract?
What do I do for a living - I work for the government. The pay''s not as great as it could be, but I can assure you that the top guy in my area doesn''t get a multimillion dollar pension. If you guys are concerned about how much your CEO makes, my "CEO" makes about $400K a year, although his housing and transportation costs are paid for.
IMHO, I think most of us(knowing that UNCLE BOBBY is a S O B) would''nt care how much it cost to get him back.
Hey, we all know he''s ANTI UNION. But APFA, is as STRONG as they are, BECAUSE of UNCLE BOBBY !!!
OUR PROBLEM WOULD"NT BE UNCLE BOBBY, OUR PROBLEMS "ARE" UNCLE JIMMY(little), and UNCLE JOHN(ward).
At least APFA will "clean their house" shortly.
We, twu, are forever "doomed"!! With the lone(POSSIBLE, I HOPE)exception, of the AMT''s getting AMFA.
The pilots ??? Well as a group, that traditionally votes Republican, well you get my "drift".
Now back to uncle Bobby.
He would SHRINK the company, right off the bat, rebuild it, which would allow 90% of union members to be re-called, AND give INSTANT heart attacks to the following CEO''s
Mullin-DL
Andersen-NW
"GORDO" -CO
Seigal-US
Hey, "at this point", we really can''t lose .
How''s this for IRONY. Crandall hand picked, and groomed(at a young age) Gerard Arpey.
I''d be shocked if the stock did''nt "take off", if Uncle Bobby was announced as "HE''s BAAACK" !!!!!!!
