US Airways to Take Blankets Off Flights

Word is ricocheting around the Web about US Airways’ plan to yank blankets off its flights. Citing an Aug. 7 newsletter from the carrier, USA Today’s “Today in the Sky†blog quotes Sherri Shamblin, the carrier’s vice president of in-flight services, as saying the carrier is “going to take pillows and blankets off the aircraft. We’re looking at selling a combo pillow and blanket pack onboard. We’re down to three potential vendors and are getting really close to a decision, probably sometime during the fourth quarter. We don’t want to take the current product off until we can offer something as a replacement.â€

A replacement? Like what? Another complimentary blanket? One that you pay for isn't a replacement...it's a joke.

This desert mentality never ceases to amaze me with these people

Old news, really.

I'm for this one. Jet Blue has already started selling them. I believe they went with a Bed, Bath and Beyond product.

The dang things are nasty and a pain to keep up with. A lot of people bring their own pillows from home anyway.

I just hope Tempe gets the word out so I don't have to listen to a whole lot of bellyaching from the passengers.

Hopefully, we'll promote and sell them before they get on the aircraft also.

Im sure in typical Tempe fashion though, they'll remove the pillows and blankets three months before they actually figure out which vendor they're going to use...

Being one that has to fold those blankets after every flight, I applaud the company for going with a Buy your own program.

Has anyone in the flying public ever stopped and thought about how unsanitary the recycled pillows and blankets are? Do you know how many hairs and stains of DNA I have seen in my career while folding blankets? Why do you think many of us wear gloves to fold the blankets?

For all of those who listened to Oprah and take off your pillowcase thinking that the case is dirty...just think those pillows underneath the case are NEVER cleaned! They are dirtier then the clean case you took of was!

Wouldnt you rather have your own blanket and pillow that you can take home and launder for your next flight? I would!

Not all airlines operate like US Airways...just so you know...there are airlines who sanitize their pillows and blankets. There is a cost associated with that, as well as folding. From what you say, US apparently cut out the cleaning on them and stuck to just folding.

I'm not surprised.

Really? Just US? Ignant' as usual. Read the AA board on their "crusty" blankets, and get back to us.

I do like how AA provides premium blankets and pillows wrapped in plastic to its First Class customers. US will probably use the old pillows and blankets in what it calls FC.

In addition to the weight of the blankets, the elimination of time needed to fold and stack them and the hassle of having to tell the lady on the flight to PBI who is cold that they are all in use, think of the fuel savings that will be realized by not carrying around that load of lice and spooge day after day!

X flight segments times X pounds of lice and spooge times X flights per day is probably a heapin' helpin' of fuel.

Screw blankets...If US Airways stopped serving PBI altogether, imagine all the weight in wheelchairs they'd save.

PBI is one of those airports where I think they should eliminate the gate podiums and just replace each one with a Special Services Counter to deal with the complaints.

There is no boarding there...only pre-boarding. If you're not elderly and in a wheelchair, you're a Chairman or a Platinum...no room for anyone else.

"Now boarding all wheelchairs please, all wheelchairs at Special Services B11 for Philadelphia"

I prefer not to think about this, thanks. I live in my artificial world of "if you can't see it, it isn't there."

I also never use the pillows and blankets, btw.

If you go back to when US and HP first merged, Doug mentioned they were thinking about doing this. This is something that AC does and he was eyeing their operations I bet.

I have flown AC. I like their blankets and would purchase my own. Especially the pillow. I watched a passenger sneeze right into a pillow he had on his lap then place it on the seat next to him.

I was grossed out needless to say.

With all the extra fees, charges whatever you want to call them, I think the airlines should just bite the bullet and raise the fares. Everything has gone UP UP UP except airfares...........in certain routes. Rational airfares would solve every airlines problem.

Besides, who says everyone needs to fly? Where is it written that I "must fly"? I personally could use less families on my flights. But that's just my opinion.

Let the record reflect that there are both "lice and spooge" on US Airways blankets. They go well with bottled water for a chilling effect. $2.00
