Well I guess if usairways corporate says so it must be true. U may be the second largest US carrier. They are not the second largest carrier between the US and the islands.

Many of U's flights are saturday only and operate on there smallest mainline jet a/c. Many others are on a code share with a small regional caribbean airline.

AA's biggest CONCERN is the pullout of DL from DFW. About 20 gates are being thrown on the market at an airport w/ more than enough runway capacity AND in a very large market where most of the markets are priced with traditional high fare structures. DFW is ripe for a major LCC expansion and that is AA's biggest concern. Yes, AA could lose a major competitor to the Caribbean but there would be plenty of carriers that would step in there as well, including some of the LCCs.

Any one of the lcc carriers can step in at anytime to the caribbean.

Yea and a lot different airlines could set up shop at DFW. For all the good the open space provides there is a down side. LONG taxi times and weight restrictions are two for thought.

The biggest down side is that AA owns 70-80% of the market. Which LCC wants to come in and go toe to toe with AA? No one. Airtran will slowly increase its schedule, but no one is going to make a major move. LLCs are losing money just like the legacy carriers now. Jetblue doesn't have the planes, Southwest knows that a major move will cause them to lose money at least a couple of quarters in a row, the rest are already losing money. AA will have DFW to itself for 2-3 years before a major presence moves in to compete.

I couldn't agree more, RESMAN.

Corporate America calls the shots in this country. All politicians need the wealthy's money for their campaigns. Some may talk like they are pro labor, but that's all it is is talk.

I said they may just be the 2nd largest US carrier, not the second largest in the region.

In an earlier post, you said US is not the second largest carrier between the US and the Carribbean.

In terms of number of passengers and regardless of some weekend only flights, the numbers in air_guy's post tell a different story.

Did it occur to you that a foreign flag carrier could be the second largest carrier between the US and the Caribbean?

Do you have the numbers for any non US airlines?

Yes it did. Foreign flags start showing up after the four US carriers. I think Air Jamaica was the biggest. And by the way, am not trying to create any controversy just to to share some information that I have, to help the discussion. Network planning is my line of business.

Have a good weekend

On LCC's in DFW, WN can't fly from DFW unless they stop flying from Love Field. That was the reason for the Wright amendment. AMR, Braniff, Texas Air had all signed leases saying they'd only fly from DFW and not Love. Southwest was formed and all the airlines sued to prevent them from flying from Love but because it was intrastate (to start--this was before deregulation) WN got the go-ahead. Then when deregulation came along, the Wright amendment said Love flights could only go to contiguous States (some Kansas Congressman added Kansas to that list a few years ago). So WN would have to leave Love to fly from DFW. Airtran, and perhaps JBLU, are the ones who could go into DFW. But again I think AMR is probably negotiating to lease them all, just to keep others out. Does anyone know?
