US Airways to Loose 800 Loyal Employees to Save Money

By the end of March, US Airways will furlough almost all but 50 of its aircraft cleaners to bring in cheaper contractors to clean their aircraft. Most of these employees had been with the company for 15 plus years.

Many of these employees started cleaning aircraft when Piedmont and US Air merged back in 1988. Most of the employees that joined the utilities department in 1988, came from the fleet service department.

US Airways will begin using vendors the clean the overnight aircraft and through flights in many stations. Many airlines have vendors cleaning their aircraft and many have gone back to their own people because of theft or poor cleaning of the aircraft.

One Cleaner said," Most of us in the past years have taken great pride in assuring that our aircraft cleanliness was second to none. Cleaning air sickness accidents, dumping lavs, and cleaning totally trashed cabins are job functions that have gone without notice for many years."

The options for these employees are very slim. They can take the severance pay and move on to other employment or come to the fleet service department and basically start all over again.

We wish these employees the very best in whatever they decide to do in the future.

many of those 800 people voted themsevles out of a job . so wahts the problem? <_<

I assume telling you your co-workers voted it in is of no comfort, is it?

Whenever I hear that, it does not sooth my sense of justice, either.

Unfortunately companies can't keep the same staffing levels they had in the past. We are all screaming for capacity reductions...well guess what - with that comes the loss of jobs. Business is business.

I voted no, and it did not matter how any utility person voted, the mechanics far out number the utility.

When you go to work look around you.....six out of ten people you look at voted for that garbage.....that is if the "fighting machinists" were honest with their tally.

I blame the IAM more than anybody else, why no recommendation? Yes or No? I do get a kick out of their statement with regards to their stance on the UAL pension issue and their willingness to strike!!!! Where were they at USAirways???

Its over, I feel sorry for all those who loose their jobs(including myself) but get over it!!!!

I feel Piney coming over here with a big "get over it". Yet he will harp about TSA and PHL bag problems because it affects him. But he could care less you lost your job he just says get over it. Amazing

And bad business is bad business.

I have never heard anyone scream for staffing levels of the past when management and labor work together to save a company.
The huge reduction in labor staffing levels along with the outrageous increase in management positions would lead one to believe that even after cutting labor costs a company could not survive partly due to the amount of management greed and incompetence.
Many in labor agree that with managements unwillingness to participate in the concessionary fiasco that has been forced on other employee groups no company would survive.

When a company throws loyal employees to the street and treats those that remain like animals, it leaves itself little chance for survival in a service related industry.

The only people not laughing at US Airways management are themselves and the loyal employees past and present, who gave so much to save a airline run by idiots.

I'm willing to bet you that most of those 800 would not have voted themselves out of a job. had the union been more forthcoming than they were and had the ACTUALLY negogiated a better deal or simillar to what the cwa got, things would have been different. But then again you probably wouldnt know what that means as you are most likely a mgmt that doesnt have any clues as to how to run an airline

ok [deleted by mod- watch the name calling] . 1st of all i am not management. far from it. just a f/a. second of all these people voted for it. just like our f/a voted for that garbage contract with all the dead head bull. i came really close to voting for it but the day of voting i read the t/a closely and made my decision from that. the big word here is decision. they made that decision to vote for the contract , therefor making a decision to vote themselves out of a job. simple as that .

When this vote passed, I assumed that those who voted "yes" voted to eliminate the jobs of those who voted "no."

Aren't unions great?

If there was no union or any vote, the company would have eliminated all the jobs and give a more generous severance package.

ok but in my post i didnt call anyone a name so no need to delete whatever it was. but those in the outline cities such as mine were sold out from under the bus to protect those who are in phll. and our choices are lga, phl, or bos. some choices huh! the iam is the only union that i have ever been in and i wouldnt want to be in again since they sold us out time and time again.

well i voted and NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
AND Just like robbedagain i am out of a job after 20 years

THANKS TO A SPINELESS UNION and a STINKY COMPANY.

Best of luck to all
because you all will need it.

You'll be lucky to be here by th summer of 2006
