US Airways Chief Sees Deals on Horizon

Is it just me, or did Parker seem to be making some not-so-subtle hints about a possible US/UA merger with some restructuring of domestic route networks? Maybe I am reading too much into his statements.

As for United's desired strong NY presence that Parker alludes to, he can only be referring to LaGuardia as US has relatively small operations to/from JFK and EWR. Last time I checked, you can't fly a transatlantic 747 into or out of LGA!   Flying into that airport in a L1011 or DC-10 during a snowstorm can make a white-knuckled flier out of the most seasoned of travelers!

I'll be interested to see how everyone else interprets this article.

Someone should tell Parker that he's not going to get to run United.

Even the reporter is a goof--in 2000, UA had significant transcontinental and transatlantic ops out of JFK and EWR. A US operation at LGA does UA no good, particularly without the shuttle (which, to this day, would be lost in a merger since the DOJ is not going to let DCA/IAD go together as they sit).

I agree. I think a US/UA deal is a pipe dream. US may be involved in some indirect way with the current merger activity, but there is no way they will be a major player. Wishful thinking for Parker.

Additionally, the pilots at Delta, Northwest, United, and now Continental are all on record as saying that a deal will not get their blessing without their involvement. As we saw with USAirways failed attempted hostile takeover of Delta, these are not idle threats.

While Parker and even many USAirways employees may want a merger with United or another airline, what is actually relevant is whether or not the employees and particularly the pilots of the other airline want USAirways. I guarantee that the United pilots (and I can only assume the pilots of the other 3) want nothing to do with USAirways. This is nothing personal, but everyone has been watching the civil war closely. Keep in mind that this is not a situation where one company is in bankruptcy and has no choice but accept what is handed to them.

Ironically (and for the record I don't think this will happen, but it is interesting to speculate), you could see the US pilots vote out ALPA in favor of USAPA, then while bogged down in litigation be merged with another ALPA airline who might staple the non-ALPA US pilots. Then another representational vote could happen and the MAJORITY would vote for ALPA and... viola! US pilots become ALPA again and at the very bottom instead of with their relative position. IMO that would be a serving of just desserts.

Hmm. East coast conquest, and international routes. Sounds like a money maker to me. That is if everybody else follows suit and stops all the competition here in the states.

You obviously don't understand Allegheny/Mohawk LPP's.

And who is going to sue who once we become USAPA? On what grounds? Over what issues?

UAL will be split up and sold in pieces once this consolidation begins again. As will LCC. Both absurdly run companies are worth more split apart than merged as a whole with anyone. Pilots will have nothing to do with it. If the money had wanted U to merge with DAL it would have happened.

If you don't understand who decides what happens in the money world you really need to figure it out. Pilots have no control. One way or another.

I've been saying the same thing for a couple months now, I almost hope it happens.

That the best ya got???

Ain't even new news sir.

C'mon give us a "UCT" like Fedex buying DHL or something.

(btw, pilot is correct -- UA & US will be splintered and sold. Just like carousel horses are worth more individually then as a group)
you people talk so much crap . you have no idea what's going to happen. no one does until it does.

I'm sorry, but there's nothing I can do but laugh hysterically at this statement! :D
Not that I want to see anyone miserable but sometimes I wish there would be a UA/US merger just to put you in your place. You NEVER come on here with anything constructive to say. What is your grudge against US or its employees that you would like to see them fail. I have all the respect in the world for UA and its employees but you know you're never to big or too good for anything. Look at BN, EA, PA, and TW.

Laughing just like the Pan Am, Eastern, Braniff, and Western guys. I like a good laugh myself. Especially at guys who don't understand what can happen to them and their careers when the money starts talking and moving.

No need to apologize though. Have a good laugh. I was in Dallas the morning after Braniff shut down. I've watched what happens when money starts talking and pilots start walking. If you think United is immune from ANYTHING in this business you've got your head squarely up where the sun don't shine.

Enjoy the joke. And be ready for anything. Because that is exactly what is going to happen. And the pilots don't control a single piece of it.
