I mean, since the FEDS already let....DL/NW....UA/CO and WN/Air tran 'slide, one could make the VERY STRONG case that ...they HAVE to let AA/US go through, albeit making Dallas/Tempe 'sweat-it-out-for God-knows-how-long' !

No USAIR! Hopefully the DOJ will abandon the Ugly Sister and AA emerges as a stand alone carrier. USAIR needs AA, not the other way around. Only reason US is profitable with their current structure is they have employees working below market wages and benefits and unions happy to facilitate that for the company.

Dougie should call his buddies at the IAM EAP for support.

Bears,
Why do you want AA to merge with a nonunion carrier?

Do you think the jetblue employees will get organized? Historically jetblue employees have shown no interest in becoming organized besides a vocal minority of disgruntled "activists".

Josh

"Vocal minority?"
"Disgruntled activists?"

Jesus, Josh; you sure you don't work for Ford & Harrison, ANH, or another of the shadowy "avoidance" firms?

supposedly he's a crooked banker, for some reason he has a hard on for the IAM like any other union is much different. For the most part his posts are for amusement only.

First off, I have no ill feelings towards US, or thier employees !!!!!!!!!!!!!

With that said,......I believe this DOJ resistance is squarely aimed at US, not AA.

US has proven it can make money ALONE (thanx to the valuable Philly hub).

The time has come (now) I believe, for AA to line up financing for Jet Blue. (the B I G money boys...ARE..out there) !

B6 is TOTALLY.....NON Union,...a BIG plus for AA (customer service wise). Compatible A/C.
Lets face it,....all the new flying over these few years that B6 is doing, is old AA flying.
Let B6 fly domestic, and Carib,.....and AA fly all the International (except Mexico and Canada)

Something such as this, could have a strangly familiar 'ring-to-it', in that it would be close....to what (uncle) Bobby CRANDALL preposed years ago, when he vowed, NOT to chase 'Nickles and Dimes' domestically .

I'm hopeful R L C weights-in with a comment soon.(on todays DOJ announcement) !

I feel badly for AA and LCC employees after what Parker did. AA is better off without him. You got a look at the REAL Parker. And it is not good. Probably better off with JetBlue.

Why the hell can't you guys focus on the topics instead of discussing the people posting here? For a group of supposed airline professionals, you'd never know it by reading this website.

i highly doubt that b6 would want to merge with anyone at this point
and given that they have a monoply at jfk and add aa to the mix the govt probably would not allow it but stranger things have ocurred before

B6 and AA both say they don't want to merge with anyone and their cost structures are low enough that there are questions about what would happen to significant parts of their operation if they operate at higher costs.
Further, the DOJ's comments make it questionably whether any of the big 3 could pull off a merger with any other airline and find their blessing. AA and DL both have enough presence on the west coast that adding AS or any other player could be problematic. The same could be said about B6 plus any of the other legacies on the east coast.

LAX is a good market for expansion by the existing airlines because the gate limitations mean that the barriers for entry are high and fares will only go up - and the DOJ can't force LAX to build more gates anymore than they can tell the FAA to put in NextGen in the NE which would increase the capacity of the NE airports considerably. Thus, LAX is effectively a slot controlled airport which makes it ripe for growth - to the extent that any carriers have more room to grow - but that also means the DOJ would likely heavily scrutinize any transactions that involve LAX.

Agreed. Didn't Barger already tell Horton last year that B6 wasn't interested in merging?

Until Tuesday, I would have predicted that a merger of AA and B6 would not be blocked by the government, but now - I'm not so sure. Until Tuesday, AA+B6 would have looked a lot like WN and FL, which wasn't challenged. Now, a merger of AA and B6 would look like AA wanted to eliminate a low-fare competitor (which would be accurate).

I think it's time for the low-cost airlines to grow and stop marking time until their next merger. Too bad Parker spent 8+ years not taking advantage of his very low labor costs; he could have grown US into a much larger competitor. Instead, he continually focused not on growing, but on merging with other airlines. IMO, he spent far too much energy worrying about capacity discipline when he should have been growing. Leave the capacity discipline to the higher-cost airlines who must shrink because of their higher-costs.

Remember back in 2001, the feds killed the UA-US merger. Airways will pull out all the stops to complete this merger. The US employees were promised wages to be brought up to industry standards and airways will have to dust off old plans to have a presence in the far east. A lot of issues to be settled if US is left at the altar.
