Teamsters to challenge IAM as airlines merge - 02/13/06
By Doug Cunningham

Teamsters Local 104 in Phoenix is filing today for an election pitting them against the International Association of Machinists for the right to represent roughly 6200 mechanics at America West and U.S. Airways. The two airlines have emerged from bankruptcy and intend to merge. Andy Marshall is Secretary Treasurer of teamsters 104. He says normally it's not a good thing for unions to compete with each other but in this case the Teamsters will provide more aggressive and effective representation for workers who otherwise would be forced to accept bankruptcy concession contracts.

[Andy Marshall]: "We are very confident that we have the legal position, precedent and the ability to force U.S. Airways - the new U.S. Airways - to negotiate a new contract for the combined unit. The IAM has stated publicly that they have no intention of doing that and they will simply impose the bankruptcy contract. They have the right to force the company to re-open also and they refuse to do it. So it's a very clear-cut issue of one union saying we're not going to do anything, the other union saying not only can we, but we will."

Marshall says the Teamsters currently represent 833 mechanics at America West/U.S. Airways while IAM represents 5400.

The majority of the craft and class are working - - and they will vote.

It is up the the Teamsters and IAM to produce the highest turnout possible. I know the Teamsters will.

Have some faith and be open to change.

It's doubtful that an election would end up in non-union status--even if 50%+1 don't vote. If that happens, the NMB would likely keep IAM as the union.

I recently took a labr relations class at ERAU, and my instructor says it's unlikely there would be no union, especially since the workgroup involved is so large.

The IBT also says it's unlikely--just because the IAM says it will happen (and just because it might have happened in the past)--doeesn't make it true!

I have faith that the membership on both sides will vote to take control of thier destiny - And just for the record I have been nonunion at awa before and I have been IAM before too - so my earlier statement stands.

Name one case with mechanics employed by a major or lcc, just one. It doesn't exist.
