No toilet privacy on new choppers

Peter O'Neil

There will be no privacy curtain around the unisex toilet facilities in Canada's new $3-billion fleet of maritime helicopters, the Defence department has concluded.
AgustaWestland, a European helicopter firm, alleged yesterday that the move is part of a broader scheme to "dumb down" the aircraft's specifications to help its competitors.

RP, I enjoyed your posts on these forums a lot more when you had something of your own to say. Not that the items you post aren''t interesting, just that they''re as impersonal as the sources they come from. Let''s hear from YOU more often, young fella!

I was quite impressed by Sikorsky''s commitment beyond just building the helicopters. Component repair and overhaul work on their other types done here on the wet coast is really positive.
Did AgustaWestland make similer overtures for the Ch149''s or the Seaking replacements ?

I agree Vortex Ring, buy Igor

Young fella ? That was some time ago. Now I am a bald eagle, well at least trying to be one. I just find more convenient to keep a low profile.

Vortex Ring

I got your rather very monotonous point...

Pedal Jam

I don't know all the details about their bid as I have no other access to what is going on as the newspapers. The position Agusta Westland initially was to give back most of the 480 million they received after the cancellation of the Mulroney's contract, engines built in Canada at Pratt & Whitney.
Lockeed Martin bid with the US 101 has engines and frames made in Canada at Pratt & Whitney and Bell respectively.
Only Eurocopter and Sikorsky didn't had any significant 'compensation' package until now. Eurocopter gave up and Igor came up with the BC deal.

But these details are constantly changing as the contenders come up with ever better deals to get the order. The recent contracts between Sikorsky and 5 BC firms is just an example. Don't know more details.

The Defence Department concluded two years ago that the only helicopter that could meet its qualifications to replace the aging fleet of Sea Kings was the controversial EH-101 Cormorant -- the "Cadillac" chopper Prime Minister Jean Chrétien once branded a waste of taxpayers' money.

As a result, the military decided to "rationalize" its statement of requirements so three helicopters that were initially deemed not robust enough, would get a new chance to qualify.

Cmdr. Girouard said despite the publicity surrounding problems faced by the ageing CH-124 Sea King helicopters, the 40-year-old shipboard aircraft performed well.
"If we needed one, we had one 90% of the time, or within a couple of hours of 90% of the time," he said. "On the whole, they've come through quite well."

The 16 Sea Kings sent to Operation Apollo flew more than 2,100 missions and logged more than 6,000 flying hours.

"I think Canadians should be proud of what their navy's done," he said.

Just to stir the pot a bit, since it seems all we hear is that the military requirements can only be met by one helicopter only, has anyone wondered if they have raised the bar really high themselves to ensure they get more than they really need?
I know if my Dad offered to buy me a brand new car and initially cost wasn''t a factor, I know I''d be going for the cadillac model, and once he realises I''m dreaming and tells me to stuff that idea and now he''s changed his mind and wants me to look for something more practical, you can be sure I''d still whine and cry for that cadillac since I really got my heart set on it. And add to that, I also told all my friends that I was getting the best of the best.
I''d like to be convinced that the Cormorant is the only one that could do the job, but that''s not going to happen anytime soon.

I don''t know about anyone else, but his whole G.D. mess has taken on the proportions and smell of the O.J. Simpson trial for me.

As interesting as it should be to ''our world,'' it''s gotten so sickening that I don''t want to hear any more about it, inasmuch as all every update does is remind me of the sickening political stench it''s become, and how reprehensible Cretin and his pack of disgusting cronies really are.

Don''t look forward to anything better in the future, either, boys and girls. Until enough people get off their complacent asses and turf those putrid Liberals out of Ottawa, and there''s meaningful political reform, we''ll continue to be run by the elected dictatorship we allow, and DESERVE!
