quoted from the above article:

"In this round, US Airways is benchmarking its pay scales against those of America West."

Has anyone figured out exactly what was the driving force behind the parity plus one plan? And now this. I know the America West benchmarking is not news, it's just that it seems crazy to go from a philsophy of "top pay in the industry" to "as low as the lowest" in just three years.

Probably when they got new batteries for the calculator, they found that they could not afford both "top pay in the industry" and the necessary management bonusses. Obviously, something had to give.

I think it's called trying to 'Survive'! You will see all the airlines follow this model very soon. United might not even survive at all! Delta will be next to go BK..... For once (and for a first) US Airways is ahead of the game in terms of turning the corner and making all this work. They have a plane in the 170's that everyone is gonna want (Jet Blue, Southwest) knowing that the 50 seat/and less market is no good with a regional jet (and with fuel prices, we are operating Dash 8's which are better). And having the WO carriers has also help turn things around. I believe now management and labor can actually sit down and talk about would needs to be done. We are not totally out of the woods, but at least i can see a little light at the end of the tunnel.
Oh well, guess we will now see what happens...

While I have not heard anything about US and AWA getting
together, it would make sense to lower US wages to AWA
levels and then merge the two together. This would give the
combined entity a large presence on both the East and West
coast, along with additional feed for Star Alliance and US
Caribbean and European flights. Also, AWA customers
would have many more options for reaching the business
centers on the East Coast.
