Part time hours reduction?

Just be thankful you all are not Piedmont employees whose part time shifts are 7.5 a day. Only part time employees get the overtime and part timers can never be upgraded to full time medical/vacations etc., even though they work a full time schedule alllll the time!

I’m confuses do part-timers want 4 hr shifts 5 hr or 6 hr shifts 7 hr shifts or 8 hr shifts HO! that’s right 8 hr shifts are consider full time.

john john,
5.5-6.0 shifts would do just fine.

but in this day and age with this cheap@$$ dive-aint gonna happen..

Meanwhile back in the bigger stations they work the part timers 6.5 x5 to avoid hiring full time employees so in essence the ration of full time is way below 40 percent. This keeps their pockets full of $$$ because medical costs on the companies end are lowered.

The 6.5 part time agents want less hours because they are also mandatoried on top of it all and still get part time bennies. It is a crime! The smaller stations on the otherhand thrive on lower hours because of the operational needs of service. They fill in the gaps and there is no overtime unless they lose staffing by attrition, in which case the company will fill it with an early out line, 8.72 an hour that never goes away and keeps furloughed employees from coming in. They have us in a cage with a lock on it. The only way to open the key is to SLOW DOWN! A major slowdown of good ole customer service to the max would open the cage and bring in more opportunities to the employee groups.

forgot to mention remember big time... only MANAGEMENT can MANDATORY... that has been a given since we had a contract so be sure when you leave you leave its up to MANAGEMENT to MANDATORY you and you need to be given a 1 hour notice and you are NOT TO BE MANDATORIED ON YOUR DAY OFF>.... UNIONIZED SUPERVISORS ARE NOT MANAGEMENT BUT THEY WILL SOON>> details at 11

I find it hard to believe that any "wise management team" would want to put unionized supervisors in charge of their fellow union members with no "real management " on duty at all. Today in many cities there are no non-union managers on duty at times and sometimes there is none on duty the entire day. As a union member we are not allowed to rat on each other and if a union supervisor does he/she may have to answer to his/her union. Common scence would tell any high level dept manager that he has to have a non-union representative on duty at all times to effectively operate a location.

Hey part-timers don't worry about your 4 hour shifts!! .... If they leave union brothers and sisters in charge and no management OD IM sure the union CSS's will give you extra hours, that means less work for them. With no management on duty they will never know for sure if the extra hours were necessary ...... :D CSS gets to take easy and you get your hours ..... ;)

FROM www.cwa.net

The Labor Advisory committee met in Phoenix for their quarterly session on September 5, 2007 at 12:30 PM PST at the Ritz Carlton hotel.

The CWA presented the following issues to Doug Parker and the Committee for this meeting;

Mandatory overtime in the airports, again a constant problem that is not going away. The staffing levels are not where they should be and the turn over rate, due to the low starting rate of pay in RES and the airports, is causing very low morale and people are leaving for better paying jobs. The level of knowledge required and amount of stress that the agents are under is the main cause for the attrition in customer service system wide.

The CSS agents are being forced to issue the mandatory overtime notices in the mid-size and smaller stations , which is a violation of the Mandatory overtime language in our CBA and the Mandatory overtime arbitration ruling from a few years back. Doug was advised that a local east manager thought it was ok to use non-management people to issue the mandatory and was told that when a steward filed a grievance on it being done incorrectly, the manager took the position that you are grieving one of your own members so it is an invalid grievance. Doug was told the CWA is not in agreement with a CSS issuing mandatory notices, that they now have shift managers in the east where we did not have them before and those are the people who should be issuing the mandatory overtime. The CWA also told the committee that many locations leave new hire agents to work alone at the end of the night to deal with irregular operations without any shift managers on duty. We also said we are not going to continue to stay past our shifts unless we are mandatoried per our contract by "management". If no one in management tells us to stay via the negotiated process, we are going home at the end of our shifts on time. Shift managers are not being scheduled at night in many cities and that needs to be corrected as soon as possible.

Our part timers currently have 4 hour shifts. They are rebidding after 1 month because the schedule cant be covered with 4 hours and now they are getting 5-5 1/2, but they've been told in Jan they will be going back to 4. We are currently paying overtime to several night agents (when they can get someone to cover it) beacuse the open lines are night counter. Just give the part timers that get off at 7pm another 1 1/2 hours and it would be covered.
We WERE overstaffed, no problem, we've had 5 people quit/get fired in the past month so now we are understaffed by 2, BUT there is a hiring freeze until they find out what the PIT people are going to do so WE get to work short for a couple months during the holidays waiting (anyone in PIT going to come down for an EO FT position?) for a decision, then for hiring someone, then for training, etc. This place is a joke when it comes to hiring and keeping agents.
We now have a station manager, ramp manager and 4 shift managers, HOWEVER, there are still times when we dont have a manager on duty. With 6 managers you cant cover it so there is at least 1 on duty at all times? Sorry if someone gets the late night shift, but they need a manager there at all times.
