Non-rev Travel Letter Info

I got my letter today in the mail (BY the way, another $11000 well spent CCY, guess the Hub, DRS and USDaily arent adequate avenues for dispensing info to active employees, of course retirees would have to get snail mail, but.....)

There are a couple of items at work here.
For the most part, active employees will have the same benefits as last year including no term pass fees taken out of pay, 8 companion passes, ability for single employees to register a "Guest" (registered companion name change only).
All retired employees regardless of time will still have 4 companion passes offered.
All retired employees with less than 25 years of service , and for the dependents of other retirees, we will offer a Service Charge program only, thereby eliminating the Term Pass Charge. (Does anyone know what the Term Pass charge was this year for retirees?) Service charge is $20 ow coach domestic and $40 ow coach international plus taxes
Upgrades are now $20 per segment domestic regardless of miles, Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, Caribbean and Central America and $100 per segment Europe. This means the <1000 mile segments increases $5 and the >1000 miles segments decrease by $10. (Are we going to have to start selling $5 upgrades to add to the $15 Zone A upgrades out there that cant be reissued or are previously issued letter upgrades still ok with Zone A and B upgrades now considered $20 upgrades since they are good for 3 years?)

Also all employees, active and retired, can purchase ID75/90/95 on UA and LH depending on the carrier and person traveling. This includes family members and domestic partners listed on term passes as well as parents.

Hope777,

Either you got a different letter or missed a part.

"The service Charge program will require a payment of $20 or one-way coach domestic travel and $40 for one-way coach international travel, plus applicable taxes."

The letter does not specify if "international travel" is only Europe, or if it includes Canada, Mexico, and non-US Caribbean destinations.

As for the upgrade fee, you are correct - $20 per SEGMENT including all but European destinations, $100 each way to/from Europe.

Since it is skimpy on details, one can only guess how mulitple domestic legs to connect to European flight will be handled. For example MYR-CLT-PHL-CDG.

Best (& cheapest) would be $40 each way (plus taxes) since you're going to/from a European distination. Upgrade would add $40 each way for 2 domestic segments & $100 each way for trans-atlantic segments. This would total $80 r/t coach or $360 r/t first/envoy (plus taxes in both cases).

Worst case would be $20 each way MYR-CLT-PHL & $40 each way PHL-CDG (plus taxes). Upgrade would be same as above. This would total $120 r/t coach or $400 r/t first/envoy (plus taxes again).

One positive note in letter - ID95 available on Lufthansa (active & retired & eligible family menbers. Domestic partners get ID90, & parents ID75.

One other thing - I think tadjr is saying the same thing but to make sure.

Retirees with over 25 years continue under the current no charge system. This includes their spouses or domestic partners. (I guess they figure that anyone retiring after 25 years doesn't have dependent children)

As for tadjr's question about current charges for retirees with less than 25 years, I know it is $70 per year for a single retiree (no spouse).

I think this change is crazy. What does the company hope to gain? Are they trying to generate revenue from retired employees? The annual svc charge was $55 per year. Now it is going to cost $40 round trip every time they fly. And this is for space avail travel. Unbelievable. Something has got to be done about this. Does this affect union retirees as well? Can the unions do anything? Every employee should complain about this nonsense!!

Hey, the key here is for retirees is if they have 25 years of service time. If 25 years or more at retirement, then pass will continue to be free (so to speak) and be boarded at an S-3 priority. If the retiree has less than 25 years at retirement, then the service charge plan is used and and S-4 priority.
