NO IFE on domestic A/C

I don't see US being "The Airline of Choice" without the IFE.
But.... but.. but... what about Southwest? There IFE is second to none, especially to Europe! And from what I hear, DL's new inseat TV's almost *never* work.... search Youtube....

As for the SW flight attendants playing games...well, come on. You know what our crew members are like. The game will be who ignore the passenger the most? or how many passengers can we make soil there pants today? Bouncy and bubble youthful behavior tends to look great when people are slim and trim. Our crews??!! Dancing hippos, a real circus act...and yes, flight chic, bring back the scales.

LOL! So sad and so true! We all know US flight attendants playing games would never work. I mean, they fly a nine hour flight to Rome and do push pull. Or others fly to the West coast and only do one beverage service. They think putting cups and water on top of the trash cans by the lavs is good enough. If they can't even do a full service, then they sure as he!! aren't going to be playing any games. The only games they play is to see how long they can ignore the passengers so they can finish reading their tabloid magazines or trashy romance novels and drink six cans of diet Coke. I've even had some flight attendants bark at me for being nice to the passengers. *sigh*

You're so right! You should really try for more FCO trips, and show them how a real service is done. Then, you can play games in the aisle and on the PA so they can watch you and learn!

Ew! No thank you! Been there, done that and won't ever do it again unless it's a crew with reserves and not a midnight quick call. Some of those biotches are mean! It only takes one or two to ruin it for everybody too! As for the game playing, I could have some real fun with that one. I would have the passengers play a game - Let's see which f/a we can annoy the most. Each section will have a different f/a to target. I could give the pax lots of napkins and trash to throw away. Then I can pass out drinks and have a bunch of passengers ring their call buttons so they can pick up their trash (note: this is after the official trash pick up). Then I can have lots ask for pillows and blankets while the f/as are on the cart serving. Then I can have more ring their call buttons to find out if they are going to make their connection. Then I can have more ask for strange things in the back that we don't have like decaf herbal tea or lemonade and then when they say they don't have any the pax can complain and be really mean. Or I could get everyone to ask for three drinks a piece or ask for strange combinations like cranapple with a splash of sprite, splash of seltzer, two limes, and three ice cubes. Oh, and I can have lots of pax ask for their monitor to be reset since it doesn't work. I could go on and on. Wow! I like the idea of having inflight "games"!

A few years ago NW removed the ovens from the DC9s to save weight since they don't serve meals on those planes anymore. I think they have taken the aft ovens off most of the 320s as well, but have kept some for the flights that go to the islands.

Again it is about weight.

Alright nothing surprises me now BUT ...

1. how do we know for sure this will happen? Where's the source?

2. EVERY domestic Bus I fly on has the ovens installed in the aft but the power is pulled. Why not get rid of them???

Yeah, but then where will we put all the extra pillows, blankets, and crew bags if they take the ovens out?

DUH? What was I thinking

Well there's alway the "new empty cart space" since we won't need so many carts because we don't provide a "complimentary beverage service" anymore ... The West fleet does not honor the "all or nothing" cart alignment stuff that the East (and every other airline) MUST do .... So, now we actually may have space in the galley ... and yes, I've seen someone lay down there.
but since everyone will be taking their business elsewehere we can actually get the last 2 rows to read!

I only transcon'd Southwest once, and there were only 30 people on my flight. We all got our own row, and we put up the armrests and slept. It was great. Sometimes it really scares me that they are the only airline making money, because almost every time I fly them the planes are rarely even half full. Do the math, something isnt right. US flights full, WN flights half full. US losing money, WN profitable???

Im all for doing away with the IFE. If you cant bring something on the plane to keep you busy for 6 hrs, then you deserve to suffer... OOOH, OOOH, idea for Tempe...

In addition to the the $2 Cokes, how about selling Suduku puzzles, and those puzzle books? I'd buy one for sure. Every time I see the FA's doing those Suduku puzzles, I could kick myself for not bringing them with me.

First of all, why in the he!! haven't they got rid of all pillows and blankets yet?
The IFE is a joke anyway! Half the time it works?? Audio always static, stereo channels are a month behind, we show movies from 1999, screens go up and down all the time, dark, or skipping and bad tracking on screens. I was working an Airbus the other day with the newer IFE, no tapes, and the system was STILL programmed for JUNE!!!
Some might think this is such a big deal, but, IF you can't take care of the IFE or have proper maintanence, then rip it out!! The system is worthless. I am sick of complaints, running up an down the aisle cause this channel don't work, the jack is loose, or they need a refund. For once, I think this is a good idea!
PLEASE, please retreat the beverage selling concept?? You will make the customers, and employees SO HAPPY!!!

Before anyone bashes my post, this is just until they can find a better system, right? 2009? :)

As I understand it, it's sometime in 2009. But of course that may never happen.

The system has always been a little touchy and there are those who still do not know how to operate it properly also. And people forget to write up the arm plug units if they aren't working so it gets pushed down the line. I don't think they have worked quite right ever since we started using the manual mode.

And,yes, the company is always a day late with the new programing or tapes. I think they're being lazy about it. They can't or won't stay on top of it. They've never been up to speed with them.

I know these systems can be expensive to maintain but with all things worthwhile it takes a little gumption to make it work. I think they should keep the system in until they are ready to install the new IFE's. It's a waste of time and money to keep pulling these planes off line to screw with video equipment.

As for WN, they are profitable because they only fly one aircraft type. One. That saves them millions in training expenses alone. Nor do they fly a hub/spoke operation. It's not because they don't have an IFE.

First of all, why in the he!! haven't they got rid of all pillows and blankets yet?

I know! I sent an email to mgmt wondering why they are still there. They are dirty and disgusting, so full of germs. The funny thing is, EVERYONE always asks for pillows and blankets and when you say you don't have any more that they are all out they get so mad. Huh? You mean you didn't bring a sweater? Do you ask for a blanket and pilllow when you go to the movie theatre or to a restaurant?

As for the IFE, yes, many times it doesn't work, but if we worked for a company that actually took care of items when they needed fixing instead of ignoring and if we showed up-to-date movies, then there wouldn't be a problem. This month we've been showing Chocolat. Hello! That is such as old movie. It may be good but it is old. Not all are bad though I will admit. We do show some newer ones, but not always. One thing that really needs to be taken care of is the IFE on the A330. That is a total nightmare!

The current IFE system on the domestic fleet is out dated, and has no options to improve upon. A On Demand IFE is expected to be installed, tested and certified on one aircraft sometime this fall. Once testing is completed, and certification is approved, will than it be installed across the fleet.
