NO IFE on domestic A/C

What's so galling about this, is they just spent thousands and thousands of dollars removing the video equipment from the front of the east aircraft to the back of the aircraft to match the west fleet!!

Which apparently was an exercise in futility!!

Hell, even the E-190 has a departure recording.

Lord have mercy...will they ever leave the 321's alone?

Huge..huge..huge waste of money..

The weight of the video systems on a/c is modest at best. It won't make much of a difference. But heck, I guess every pound counts these days. The savings they are targeting are the costs to maintain the systems and the fees paid to the vendors to supply the programing, headsets and printing of the programing in the magazine, etc. This is no big deal. Most people these days have their own IPods, DVD players, video games, laptops. And yes, there are a few people left who even bring a book. It's an amazing piece of technology. On your next flight take a look at how many are actually watching the movie and how many are using their own technology of choice. There might be another reason why vidoes are being dumped domestically.

Now if we can just get these Tempe sand lizards off this stupid idea of selling sodas, we might be on to something.

B/B/B,

What???!!! No way. AFTER the movie ends there is a big line to go to the lavs...this is because they were all busy watching the movie with the headsets they bought on board or used on their own. Also, many people do sit and watch the trivia programs and shorts. How could you not know this? Are you never in the aisles or serving meals in F/C while people are watching meals?

Seriously, how is it that you believe people do not watch the movies and other entertainment?

But Toothy Grin, don't you know that it is not our responsibility to provide inflight entertainment? We are just a mode of transportation, and that is it. If passengers want to watch a movie or shorts, look at trivia, or listen to music, then they need to bring their own form of entertainment. Period! The sooner we "train" people, the better off we will be. Don't worry, it's just a matter of time. Pretty soon, it will be the industry norm and we are leading the way. Go US!

For those of you who are slow, yes, I was being sarcastic. This was an incredibly dumb move on Tempe's part.

Yes, CSD's on all airlines will be sitting in their jumpseats studying for the real estate exam waiting for a call bell to ring for a $2 coke.

Hay Gurl! Then when the call bell goes off the f/as will all be arguing over whose turn it is to answer it and then get mad at the pax for bothering them.

The CSD's job is safety first. That's why I always answer the cow bell. If Debbie does, the pax will get hurt when she hits them for interrupting that hot new article in Tiger Beat.

Easy, Easy, Easy. No where in my post did I say NO ONE watches the movie. I merely suggested the numbers who do are not worth the cost. And with all of the technologies out there, "passengers"...not all, not a few, not some...a term meant to be undefined, no quantity suggested, seem to be choosing their own entertainment of choice.

I'm actually going to change my thoughts on this a little. Right now I'm on an overnight in the UK and just had an interesting conversation with one of our pilots. It is all about weight. And he's actually surprised it is taking this long for them to do it. The weight of the video systems is very significant. And these planes are going to be stripped down to flying hulls with seats, and that's it. This is only the beginning. Airlines are in crisis mode because of fuel.

A few years ago NW removed the ovens from the DC9s to save weight since they don't serve meals on those planes anymore. I think they have taken the aft ovens off most of the 320s as well, but have kept some for the flights that go to the islands.

Again it is about weight.

If it's all about weight, why don't they take out a few rows of seats and then use it as a selling point. And start making the morbidly obese pay for 2 seats like we're supposed to.

The wonderful leg room we will have provided for our customers will make US the darlings of the industry.

I'm sure the folks on the 330's would love it.

I wish we could just get back our old management - Colodny, Schofield, Randy Malin - F100's, Operation High Ground, BusinessSelect - they could show these rookies how to really run an airline!

I would tend to say it isnt as much about weight as it is the fees that US has to pay for the right to show those programs. I can't IMAGINE what it costs. Think about it, if you have a licence to show a movie, or entertainment program, that cost has to be factored across viewers. Even if a company like Warner or Travel Channel, etc licences the program for $2 a viewing (a completely imaginary number), imagine that multiplied across X number of aircraft doing 2 viewings a day.

I think Tempe is making a good decision on this one. Apples to Apples, the cost to licence the IFE and maintain the IFE is just not worth it.

I was on a Southwest flight transcon where the FA's did a trivia game, and they gave away rolls of toliet paper and garbage bags as prizes. You had to ring the overhead bell if you knew the answer. By far more entertaining than the IFE on US.

If they are taking them off because of weight, then why do we still have ovens in the back of the Airbus? That is the biggest waste of space, although I have found many things in there over the years. Give me a nice counter to make all these $2 drinks and $7 cocktails. The IFE is not going to be that big of a deal with the exception of Caribbean flights. I can hear the complaints there. WN has never had an IFE system and everyone seems to love them so much when they threaten to leave US. Tempe is trying to turn US into WN with every passing day. Next they will get rid of the beverage carts due to the fact they are heavy and our service will go to tray service. I wonder when we will get the sneakers and shorts worked into our new uniform!
