New Wine Consultant For United

No, wine does not taste the same in le plastique. Ick. Besides, it's just plain tacky in FC.

And I suppose it is debatable that an airline in bankruptcy should be hiring a wine consultant. But then again, how much can he/she cost?? Certainly not enough to make a difference in the company's bottom line. It's not like they'd be paying this person millions. Perhaps they're making sure they can serve the best wine possible considering the budget they have to work within. If that's the case, then it's a smart move.

Besides, the point is that an airline in bankruptcy still cares enough about its passenger service to hire a wine consultant, while our FC has become an absolute laughingstock.

Everything taste different in plastic as opposed to glass. But on the other hand, there are vineyards who do serve their wine in plastic. Saves on the wash and dry.

wow we fix this and we go to profitability??
I neither said that nor believe it, delldude. Quite frankly, I'm not sure what, if anything, will bring us to profitability. But the point is that United, a full-service airline in bankruptcy protection, is taking strides to make sure their business travelers who pay the big bucks and reward UA with their loyalty are being taken care of. We are supposedly a full-service airline, as well, and we serve our FC passengers out of plastic cups.

i hear you loud and clear...once again it is quite implied that we still ,after 2 rounds of concessions...have no viable business plan..........
thank you for your post! ;) <_< :(

Well, they can have my pension if they are that 'whine' savy.

 UT

Honestly, I think if US brought at a minimum glasses (wine and otherwise) back in First, it would go a long way to removing the "cheapness". Styrofoam for coffee is fine (you get more and it stays warmer longer), the silverware US uses is fine (and actually I prefer it personally), tableclothes are unnecessary, etc., but the lack of glasses does make First feel cheap.

Oh, and bring the warmed nuts back, too. That can't possibly cost that much. In fact, I would think a big bag of nuts would be cheaper than serving each passenger 2-3 bags of cashews.

Heck, just saying "Sir, can I warm your nuts.", is enough to get them to come back. ;) (Everytime I do that, they fall over laughing)

Am I revealing that I'm not a very sophisticated frequent-flyer, because the first time I ever heard of 'warm nuts' was from the promos from that Gwyneth Paltrow movie? Or maybe I was sleeping in envoy over the Atlantic when the nuts were warming.

US does not need a wine consultant. UA competes heavily on many long-haul international routes to Asia, S. America and Europe where the competition is the likes of Qantas, Singapore, British Airways, and Cathay Pacific. All of those airlines offer truly superior Business and International First Class products and if UA wants a shot at any of that full-fare business then they need to compete product-wise. Paying some internationally known wine-guru $75k a year to "consult" is recouped pretty fast when a FC ticket from NYC to SYD goes for upwards of $10 grand.

US does not need a wine consultant. Someone in catering needs to make a decent set of selections for Envoy Class and make sure that they serve something drinkable in domestic FC. However, here in the domestic USA market, they do need to compete with other airlines who offer "first class" domestically. US is light years behind DL, UA, AA, and CO is just about every way. First Class passengers notice the difference and I'm guessing many are voting with their wallets without saying good-bye and flying other carriers. Because they leave without making any noise, nobody notices. The beancounters at CCY wonder why the number of full-fare passengers is dropping and they write it off to LCC competition. And the slide continues...
