Nope, you’re wrong. The 757's will have a 199 seat config. This will allow for a seat pitch of between 32 and 33 inches. An RJ has about 31 inches of pitch. The ATA 757's seat about 216 pax in an all coach config which gives a pitch of between 30 and 31 inches. Delta's new product will not be anything like Delta or Delta express; it will have a completely separate name and completely separate employees. Only the pilots will be DL employees. The new product will offer amenities similar to Jetblue, possibly TV, leather seats and other amenities. An RJ can't stand a chance.

BINGO. There is a method to the 199 seat madness... 4 flight attendants. I'm sure they ran the numbers figuring expected average load factors, the value to the customer of the extra room, and the cost of the F/As before deciding. I would have thought maybe 8-12 FC seats would have been the plan since the jet has room for them at 199 seats. That would've given them one step above JB (seat upgrades), and maybe even a few high yield connections from the European flights.
Another consideration is that closets, lavs, and galleys are removeable.
Rear galleys are more problematic since they're aft of the doorway, but by eliminating the forward galley by the R1 doorway, as well as mid-cabin closets and/or lavs, you could easily have a 33-35 inch pitch.
Re: JFK-ORD on B6. AA starts Saturday-only ORD-JFK service in December (this was loaded into Sabre over a month ago). Hasn't gotten a lot of attention, but it wouldn't surprise me if some of the increased talk about B6 starting up ORD service was in response to that.
