for US is currently under review and will most
likely be cancelled at some point after the merger

Sounds like the FastAir overlay of SABRE (which US never bought). People at AS and YX tell me that native SABRE is faster if you really know it, but FastAir is easier to learn. BTW, I was suprised when to learn that FastAir also works with Apollo and is used by UA.

Many US people who dislike SABRE's ticketing functions (compared to PACER) admit that its check-in and boarding control functions work quite well indeed. (For those dislike them, give native Deltamatic a try!)

One advantage of SABRE (whether you love it or hate it) is that it makes it very easy for an airline to ground handle another SABRE user. For instance, US ground handles YX at SFO and AS in BOS.
 
The much improved 'WFR' reissue formats are alot better and very similiar to what we had in PACER just before the changeover and you're absolutely right, SABRE gate control functions are probably the best in the industry!
