Living in Base on Rsv vs Commuting to be a b/h

My opinion may be a little different. It's always been a priority for me to live where my life is and that meant commuting HNL-PIT for the first seven years. My decision had nothing to do with being on reserve or chasing a block. If you live in base for the sole reason of avoiding a commute, what else besides this job is there for you when you get home? If you don't have a need to be close to anyone right now, then I would consider the other income possibility that you mentioned as well as living costs. Having a regular part time job may require you to have more control over your flying schedule. Are you thinking of a particular field? Also, you haven't been on reserve in a while--I hear it sux, so why go there if you have a choice?
My home is in Philly, so it is my home as well as my base.

Stay in base....I left PIT on my own a few years back to block chase...I wish I had never done it and had waited until I got thrown out. If you can afford to live on 73 hour guarantee then don't even think of transferring to keep a block.....plus I would think JUL89 is right on the edge and you very well might get your SCDB back. LGA/BOS/DCA are always open for transfers...see what happens when the pIT people come in and where you end up---wouldn't you be PO'd if you transferred then found out you wouldn't have lost your block ????

I thought the PRI's in PHL went to Jun/89? That said, I don't think anyone in 89 will be on reserve in FEB in PHL. Am I wrong?

In January it went to Jun/89, however, for Feb. it went to Jan/89.
I suggest staying in base, maybe watching for a 1 or 2 day ETB trip to supplement your income.
Or look to do TDY in Feb., if the company offers it in DCA.
Depending on where you commute to/from, you will be spending a lot of time away from home.
Not having to commute is worth a lot right there.

Do you have children, a significant other, gold fish?
Who will take care of them while you are trying to commute?
How much is your home time worth to you?

Good Luck (whattodo89) with your decision.

Thank you to everyone for all of your honest opinons. I decided to stay in PHL and not chase a block. I figured the quality of life living in base and being on reserve outweighed commuting to chase a block. Again, thank you to everyone. All of your thougts on the subject really did help in my decision. Merry Christmas to everyone!!
