Leather Jacket

I can not believe that some of you are actually bashing the idea of a pilot purchasing his own leather jacket to wear instead of a suit and turning it into an issue. Turn your attention to something that actually matters. You are making yourselves look foolish if you are actually making an issue out of it.
Hey Ops, we're just having a little fun. Chill, dude. Though I agree with medr, if they pay $300 for goatskin, they're dumber than I thought. At Wilson Leather, you can get a good quality lambskin jacket on sale for less than $200. of course, it wouldn't have the AA logo on it. That's it. That's the ticket. $150 for the monogram. That splains it.

Good call MrMarky, and I have my Aviator Certificate as well. (not to be confused with pilots license)

I think the leather jackets look pretty nice actually. I'm encouraged to see things "loosen up" a bit. It's an option, not a requirement. It's a bit of nostalgia and doesnt diminish professionalism in my opinion. Professional is more of a state of mind than a piece of clothing.

Oh, please, no. Some of us shouldn't be seen in public wihout gloves on, much less in shorts.
Jim,

You live in Texas correct? Then you should have no problem getting those legs tan! If not, then try a tanning salon. ;)

Oh, I tan beautifully. Color is not the problem. Wrinkled with extra adipose tissue is the problem.

;) Isn't that the truth! Just saw crew after crew while sitting in the airport waiting for a friend to arrive. SWA"S crews look like CRAP...AA, although in need of new uniforms, almost always looks professional styled and groomed. Can't say the same for SW....they look like poor white trash!! Guess thats what they attract, so thats the way they want them to look..PLEASE no more out of date shorts and bad golf shirts...:)

HAHAHAHAHAHA! I agree with the SW thing! I've never flown SW before, but saw Airline last night for the first time. I would quit in a minute if I had to work like that! But on certain of our routes its becoming SW, ie; jfk-sna or jfk-lgb. ICK

Well, that certainly makes you an expert.

I don't think the leather jackets have a lot to do with looking professional. I have seen several AA pilots cruising through the terminals with coats unbuttoned, hats in hand and shoes that have never seen a shine. I have also seen sharp looing SW pilots in leather jackets. It is a matter of personal pride and style, which slips for all after commuting home after a 14 hr duty day.

I agree. A well turned out waiter or waitress at Denny's looks more professional than some cockpit and cabin crews I've seen. Despite what some female flight attendants evidently believe, having their blouses unbuttoned down to the top of their bra and a skirt that barely covers their panties is not nearly as sexy as they think. Nor do male flight attendants with their shirts hanging out, unshined shoes, and unclean fingernails instill confidence in me as to their behavior in an emergency.

There have been many studies done in private industry over the years that report a direct correlation between maintenance of personal grooming (and I don't mean the narcissistic types) and commitment to doing a good job. I.E., Sloppily dressed people tend to do sloppy work.

Thanks for the entertainment guys, but just one thought here...

Though some of us would like to see some new threads to throw on when we go to work, I for one would wear the same ole piece of crap polyester for another 20 years if it meant I could keep some extra $$$ in my paycheck, or have more money funneled to my retirement.

Just my $ .02

Next it will be shorts and polo shirts for the flight attendants!
Ok, flying out of DFW very much it is a little troubling to see hail damage on the aircraft, but the possibility of seeing the hail damage on the back of some of those seasoned international mama FA's send me shivers

The point that's been totally missed here is that the leather jackets offer quite a bit of utility for the pilots when on and off duty. They are much warmer than the blazer/trench coat combination, and also offer much better comfort an mobility. Try preflighting a plane in South Dakota when it's -30 degrees windchill and all you have is a suit jacket and a rain coat and you'll see the logic immediately. Furthermore, the leather jackets have velcro attachments for the epaulets and name badges which allow you to remove them when on a layover. This leaves a decent looking leather jacket to wear out to dinner, rather than looking like a moron with your trenchcoat and jeans combo..

Hey, now. If us flight attendants have to look like doofi (plural of doofus, pronounced doof - eye) in our running shoes, jeans, and navy blue raincoat, why shouldn't the cockpit?
