Leather Jacket

Thats just pee-chee for the pilots-what about the F/As
We have pretty much had the same old crappy style for 20 yrs?

Delta is outfitting crews with new designer duds-to improve morale-smart $ move or not-it will bring some pride/morale back to their corps...

AA is way way overdue for a quality makeover for us-I could use a little pride and morale via a smart new uniform-right now

Mach .85"

I wasn't assuming the company would BUY pilots the jackets. Just reminiscing about the company taking back half of each TWU member's uniforms. We did recently get a new look for mechanics. Not quite the rugged "leather" look that is available to the pilots.

Will the new jackets have some kind of bible holder so that AA pilots can educate their passengers as to how crazy those passengers religious beliefs might be (if they aren't 100% in agreement with the pilot's)? You know, the same way (but to a much more extreme and lethal degree) that the 9/11 terrorists (religious zealots) educated the AA & UA flight crews and their passengers on those 4 fateful flights. Too bad that religious nutcases only see the errors of other's beliefs, not their own.

Just another way to try and reinforce the image that pilots are just blue-collar bus driver labor. This is purely a case of expectation management by the company. Unfortunately it's going to look like crap when you have individuals on a crew wearing uniform jackets and leather jackets walking through the airport. And the really cool thing for them is:

1. The company doesn't even have to pay for the jackets (and might even get a kickback from the vendor).
2. Some pilots are dimwitted enough to actually think this is a good thing.

Not to get off the subject, but in NYC about 6 or seven years ago, the PBA and NYPD wanted the city to give all policemen and women leather jackets for the winter instead of the nylon type. The Jewish community successfully campaigned against the leather jackets saying that it was too reminiscent of the Nazi Germany!

Just a little diddy!

I bring this up because when mechanics changed to the current charcoal gray and black uniforms, a F/A had said to me "Nice uniform, you look like a Nazi storm trooper!"

Appropriate enough. It fits the image of being a "SkynAAzi"...

The jackets will be authorized substitutes for the current suit jacket and are constructed of the highest grades of goatskin. We think that the finest aviators in the world deserve the finest uniform accessories. We will provide more details on ordering and availability ASAP.
Should have gone with lambskin. Goatskin looks and feels practically like vinyl.

Riiiiiight.Price has no impact on who people decide to fly, what the guys in the pointy end are wearing does...silly me.

In today's "Cheap Fares" mindset you could have the flight crew wearing bowling shirts and people wouldn't bat an eye.

As long as they pay $99.00, all is well.
You got that right!!! I would probably believe that the jackets although leather may look classy since AA is looking for the premium customers. When you look at it though I don't see what the big fuss is all about since pilots are not always visable to the customer so a change in uniform on their part is not that impactfull when compared to a change in uniform for front line service employees in the industry.

Great news. It means that more loyal AA passengers will switch to UAL where the traditional suit jacket will still be worn, presenting a much more professional appearance. Really folks, the day of the leather jacket in the cockpit is gone.
And the baseball caps that the pilots on "TED" wear are much classier than leather aviator jackets.

Gee, I wonder what the pilots of Delta, United, Noethwest, US Air, Continental will have to say about the "finest pilots in world." Leather jackets, what about caps and boots and motorcycles? I'll bet there are going to be a lot of "swelled" heads over this.
Indeed - it would make much more sense for a company, when addressing a group of its employees, to say "you're the second-best group, or fifth-best group (you can insert whatever ordinal number you feel is appropriate in this space) in our industry!"

Next it will be shorts and polo shirts for the flight attendants!

It does seem that American Airlines is following the lead of Southwest in this matter. As for actually forking out $300 for one of these leather jackets, three little words of advice: get second opinion.

I can not believe that some of you are actually bashing the idea of a pilot purchasing his own leather jacket to wear instead of a suit and turning it into an issue. Turn your attention to something that actually matters. You are making yourselves look foolish if you are actually making an issue out of it.
