John Mc Corkle

Theres been a few instances where his humour was not very well recieved. He's thrown a few sexist comments in his letters before too, probably being the classic "overcompensator" male F/A. :D

I wonder how he would feel if there were jokes made about his weight. -_-

john is a very nice guy. and he speaks only the truth !!!! so if you have never met him keep your comments to your self .

I never said he wasn't a nice guy. I just feel his comments are negative and uncalled for. He talked as if he has all the answers. I too, often read his letters only to delete them before finishing them. If I thought I was half as knowledgeable as he thinks he is, I would be running a company. Not trying to run a company from the side lines.

I've flown with him (he was, of course the B on a 757). Nive enough guy, but his newsletters became so increasingly negative against the company, the union, and even individuals that I stopped reading them. Last I heard he was on Vol. futrlough. Is his warning to do with the newsletter?
He's been back since December.

As I understand it, Mr Cohen was no longer with UAIR when the newletter was sent.

It should be noted that John did not say that the comment was his own opinion, he was merely passing along what someone else had said. Even if the joke was, in the opinion of some, in poor taste.

Also, John does not use a US Airways computer or resource to send his newsletter (which it sent only to those who have requested it).

I am not a lawyer and don't even play one on TV, but I think the company would have had a hard time making a termination stick.

Taking a check for 15 million before filing Chapter 11 is in poor taste. Taking a check for 4.5 million after running a company to the edge of a cliff is poor taste as well. Its funny how ethics seem to be a one way street at USAirways.

If John wants to be a writer in an industry that is pretty much run by those of the Jewish faith he's pretty much done. Read this:

A Fall from Grace
A Slip into Stereotype, and a Writer Learns the Fragility of Reputation

It should scare the heck out of anyone because let's face it, those who hold the power will not stand for being offended in anyway whatsoever.

While the comment relied on an ethnic stereotype, it was NOT a negative one. The point being made was that the VP himself, while apparently qualified for his job (again, I personally would NOT have made reference to his ethnicity), appeared to be poorly informed about issues as simple as his own salary and benefits. I do not think that making such a statement, while maybe rather callous, is grounds for termination. Apparently the company's legal department agrees.

What ever happend to freedom of speech
Unfortunately the issue of free speech doesn't really apply in this case- a business. "Free speech" basically means the government will not restrict speech against government.

Then should we stop posting our anti management comments on here because they will find out who we are and burn us alive?

This is a serious question given our political climate with all the new laws that are incognito to stop terrorism.

Was Mr Cohen an employee of Usairways at the time the comments were made?
No. Mr. Cohen was gone and therefore not an employee of U.

The case was argued and those points were all brought out. Plus, he wrote his newsletter in the privacy of his own home not in the workplace, and those who sign on his newsletter, whether they be employees or lay people, have to sign on to an independent vendor that houses the e-list.

John neither adds folks to his newsletters or takes them off. He is unable to do that. Folks who sign on do so through a link.

Did AFA represent John at his hearing?
Dio,

AFA represented John.
The PIT President represented him, and a rep from Council 70 PHL, where he is based.

AFA was extremely prepared.

PITbull, I find it ironic that in all his newsletters with repeated AFA bashing that, well, AFA came to his rescue to save his job. Isn't that like 'poetic justice'? Goes to show nobody messes with the union ;)

When the union's inspiration through the workers blood shall run
There can be no power greater anywhere beneath the sun
Yet what force on earth is weaker than the feeble strength of one?
But the union makes us strong

Solidarity forever!
Solidarity forever!
Solidarity forever!
For the union makes us strong.

Is there aught we hold in common with the greedy parasite
Who would lash us into serfdom and would crush us with his might
Is there anything left to us but to organise and fight?
For the union makes us strong.

Solidarity forever!
Solidarity forever!
Solidarity forever!
For the union makes us strong.

It is we who plowed the prairies; built the cities where they trade;
Dug the mines and built the workshops; endless miles of railroad laid;
Now we stand outcast and starving, 'midst the wonders we have made;
But the union makes us strong.

Solidarity forever!
Solidarity forever!
Solidarity forever!
For the union makes us strong.

All the world that's owned by idle drones is ours and ours alone.
We have laid the wide foundations, built it skyward stone by stone
It is ours, not to slave in, but to master and to own
While the union makes us strong.

Solidarity forever!
Solidarity forever!
Solidarity forever!
For the union makes us strong.

They have taken untold billions that they never toiled to earn
But without our brain and muscle not a single wheel can turn
We can break their haughtly power, gain our freedom when we learn
That the union makes us strong.

Solidarity forever!
Solidarity forever!
Solidarity forever!
For the union makes us strong.

In our hands is placed a power greater than their hoarded gold
Greater than the might of armies magnified a thousand-fold
We can bring to birth a new world in the ashes of the old
For the union makes us strong.

Solidarity forever!
Solidarity forever!
Solidarity forever!
For the union makes us strong.

Below is the offending comment in question. IMO John is skating on some very thin ice on a hot day. You decide.

John McCorkle's Newsletter, May 6, 2004

Hello Everyone:

Three days ago, I sent out an email announcing that Neil Cohen had resigned as Chief Financial Officer of US Airways. In that email, I wrote of a comment that was made to me by a pilot in the Philadelphia crew room a couple of months ago when he stated "Mr. Cohen is probably the first Jewish CFO who doesn't know what he's earning." This comment was made because the pilot obviously felt that Mr. Cohen was being - what's the word on Capitol Hill, disingenuous? - when Mr. Cohen stated during the company's bankruptcy proceedings that didn't know what his compensation package was worth. For the record, I personally feel Mr. Cohen was being disingenuous as well. What CFO is actually stupid enough to not know what he/she is earning
OY VEY!!!

As a JEW I took no offense to what was said to John. NOT by John, but to HIM. People need to get over themselves. Thankfully I have a computer to balance my checkbook because this JEW is horrible at money.

This country is wound up too tight. Loosen up for crying out loud.
