Horton was promoted to President of AA and AMR:

I predict that Horton will be replace Arpey within a short time. Horton is clearly head and shoulders above Arpey in abilities and the past few years have revealed the mistake that the Board (primarily Brennan) made when Arpey was tapped to replace Carty.

Who is the current President? Or did the company just create another senior management position?

Arpey is the current President and CEO. Horton will become President and Arpey will still be his boss as CEO (but not for long, is my prediction).

Arpey remains Chairman of the board of directors.

I agree. Classic move.....Changes are a comin!

What possible difference do any of you expect this to make? They are pushing out one beancounter and replacing him with another beancounter--note Horton's previous job...Chief Financial Officer. God forbid they should find an airline person to run the company.

What difference? Horton is not a fan of the base maintenance operations and has spoken against it in the past. Horton, aside from perhaps being Arpey's successor, will navigate away from the TULE and AFW bases.

Whether said divestiture takes the form of a spinoff or outright sale of the business will depend on which disposition method brings the highest bonus payments to the executive garbage which will, without a doubt, be the most painful for we peons.

If Arpey does leave I wonder if he will be handed a 100,000 Grand Candy Bar and if the twu will miss him.

Again not a big fan of our current top manegement at AMR;
I will keep an open mind on Horton and see where the company
goes from here. Arpey has been probably the worse CEO
in the history of AMR. Lets see where Horton will lead us.

This decision spells the beginning of the end for Arpey. Somebody must be the fall guy for the lackluster performance and it will be him. He is running the corp and he has done a terrible job. No vision at all, just the ability to move money around. Unfortunately not an "airline guy", unfortunately neither is Horton. I find it interesting the timing of the announcement to occur just prior to the TWU vote on the heals of a mere $11m loss.. The rank and file lost faith in Arpey a long time ago, now the analysts and now the board. I say good riddance!!

I can only hope for the future of the company that Horton can make decisions that will turn the company around. I'm not so sure though. I see more of the same BS decisions from someone from the same crew that Carty led.

I just hope Horton knows how to run the airline and the consulting firms hired by Arpey are replaced with an airline specific vision instead of bone heads that think all manufacturing and service industry companies are all the same and that their soundbite laden philosophies are good for American Airlines.

About halfway down the article it says....

"Colleagues say Horton, with an unflappable manner and straightforwardness, has been training for the top position his whole life."..

Let's see if he is straightforward enough to be honest about AA's plans for the overhaul bases.
Fair enough?

He could be straight forward but if your Union Leadership signs confidentiality agreements then you and I will still not know what straight forward looks like.

I don't agree with the informer much, but I think you are right on with this observation.

I wish the informers wife the best...........hope she gets better soon. All this stuff is a distant second to a loved one's health.
