...American Airlines CEO Doug Parker also urged Brewer to veto SB1062, in part to prevent damage to the state's economy, which is finally rebounding from the Great Recession.

AA has a proud history of being at the forefront of corporate support for its LGBT customers and employees, even when it wasn't very politically favorable to do so-- I'm glad Mr Parker is continuing that tradition!

Parker is pretty good about that.  As long as we lackeys are making gobs of money for him, he doesn't care about our personal lives one way or the other.

But Brewer is a scatter-brained moron (in the proud tradition of Evan Meacham), and there is no telling what she will do.

I'd expect she vetoes it, and will say something to the effect that 'while [she] strongly supports religious freedoms and considers them fundamental to blah blah blah this bill is not the best way to go about protecting them'.  She has to pay lip service to the wingnuts that put it together but she also has to realize that by signing it she'd be undoing a lot of the work that went into rehabilitating the state's image after the SB1070 debacle and the efforts of many in the business community, the several cities, and her own government to make the state attractive to global business and investment.

From the article:

"There is genuine concern throughout the business community that this bill, if signed into law, would jeopardize all that has been accomplished so far," Parker wrote. "Wholly apart from the stated intent of this legislation, the reality is that it has the very real potential of slowing down the momentum we have achieved by reducing the desire of businesses to locate in Arizona and depressing the travel and tourism component of the economy if both convention traffic and individual tourists decide to go elsewhere."

Shrewdly he mentions nothing about religious liberties or gay rights, though I'd imagine to someone with Parker's mindset it would seem bizarre not wanting to take someone's money on account of a conflict of preferences wholly removed from the transaction itself.  I'd imagine that's true of most pragmatic businesspeople who are interested in staying in business, because the fact is those who love their religious freedoms so much they'd actually refuse service to individuals who are (appear?) LGBT could/would just as easily refuse service to any other category of sinner/non believer (there are many) and therefore not be in business for very long at all.

One of the legislators said something to the effect that SB1062 is a 'solution looking for a problem', and I think that's exactly correct.  The folks that drafted this bill decry what they consider 'judicial activism' on behalf of the federal courts in recent years, but I think what they've put together here is simple 'legislative activism' in creating something for which there is no need, no point, and creates bad press and ill will on all sides. Not surprising seeing that making a farce of parliamentary process is what Arizona's politicians do best (giving their business partners and interests access to the levers of state power is a close second)...

I had forgotten about him.  From Wiki:  As governor, Mecham was plagued by controversy and became the first U.S. governor to simultaneously face removal from office through impeachment, a scheduled recall election, and a felonyindictment.[3]

Unsure if Parker has taken  his stance for the "right" reason or, as others in AZ  are, he is more concerned about the money aspect --- but will give him the benefit of the doubt on this one.

This Wouldn't Be The First Time Bigots In Arizona Lost The State A Super Bowl   ...WASHINGTON -- Arizona state lawmakers have thrust Super Bowl XLIX into the center of controversy, even though the game, set to be played in Glendale, Ariz., is still a year away.
Last week, the state legislature passed SB 1062, which would allow businesses to refuse service to same-sex couples on the grounds of religious freedom. The bill now is in the hands of Gov. Jan Brewer (R), who has not indicated whether she will sign it into law.
But if she does, opponents of the legislation -- including members of the business community -- have warned that it may jeopardize Arizona hosting a successful 2015 Super Bowl, or any Super Bowl at all...

Uncle Doug is a business man first.  He could care less what religious or personal views on topics, whatever it takes to keep a$$es in the aircraft seats is the bottom line.  Being that that the majority of the nation supports the sodomite community he doesn't want any boycotting of the hub in az and hurting profits.  I hope Jan approves the bill myself but that's not gonna happen.

In fairness to Evan Mecham, he said that he would support MLK Day, but there would need to be a reduction in one paid government holiday elsewhere as in Columbus Day or President's Day.  Given the steam rolling effect of states pushing MLK holidays, it was something that Mecham failed to get out of way from in the PC mania and trying to make the holiday cost neutral.  It didn't help that he had a very bad relationship with the media, he didn't obtain 50% of the popular vote, and he had some fishy financial arrangements.

Doug Parker's response would be expected as the airlines have historically a larger than average number of gay employees, and gay people's money spends all the same.  As Michael Jordan once replied when asked to run for public office, "White people buy shoes too."

I guess it's safe to say you'd probably vote for Clinton if she ran.

A bit of a self-correction, the correct quote was, "Republicans buy shoes too."  Easy to be confused over that detail,  although it might have been something Charles Barkley said.

There should be a comma after "Look out".   But you lost me at "sodomite".  Welcome to my ignore list.
