Conversation With Lakefeild On Thurs In Clt

You can be persuaded to do a favor if you got $1.1 Million for 9 months of work also.

I don't disagree with anything either Winglet or Rob said, but I can see 1 possible rational for UA acquiring US - if it could be done cheap like via a stock swap.

If we liquidate, UA would have to bid on any US assets that they might want - slots, planes, etc.  There could be other bidders with deeper pockets than UA - AA comes to mind.

By acquiring US pre-liquidation, UA could keep the assets they want and sell off what they don't want.

I'm not sure it does anything to fix UA's problems, though.

The ground work is laid, either United makes a deal by June or Usairways will be split between Republic, Air Wisconsin .... and United gets nothing

Thing is, United simply isn't in a position to make a deal with anyone, not even the Devil. United needs about $2B to come out of bankruptcy as things stand now - and despite all of the hoopla, not ONE party has stepped forward with a firm financing deal for UAL. For United to make a deal, it would require close to $5B in external financing when all is said and done, and AFAIK, the only three airlines ON EARTH that can get that kind of a loan are Singapore, Emirates, and Southwest.

You forgot Cathay Pacific...they made 700 million in profits last year. That is expected to double within the next few years.

Oh, don't get your panties in a wad, and while your at the mall, pick up a sense of humor ( I hear they're on sale right now. ). By the way try to read what people actually write before calling them a sorry ass (real, high-class turn of phrase, by the way). The horse's mouth being referred to is not Lakefield, it's A320pilot. And, I am well aware that Lakefield would not know who etops is--that's the whole point. If you read A320pilot's postings, it seems that Lakefield talks only to him and God. So, why would Lakefield even speak to a lowly flight attendant (I'm one too you know.)

Fair enough - CX could probably get a loan that large too, but still, with the exception of maybe WN, no US legacy airline can pull off such a feat right now.

avek00, true. However, things cannot continue. This environment is not 'business as usual.' Something's gotta give...

As I have said for the past 3 years, US Airways and United Airlines have held different corporate combination talks with different scenarios. The different scenarios could have had either company the surviving business entity, such as when David Bronner said he was interested in buying United assets for US Airways.

Both companies recognize the strength of the combined business entity and both have publicly discussed industry consolidation. In my opinion, a merger would involve private equity and I understand J.P. Morgan has been retained to be the IB.

What I have read from you over and over on this board is that there would be some merger with US being the ruling party.... From reading what Lakefield said that doesn't appear to be accurate...

Now I await your reply when you get off the tire swing in order to continue your spin, spin, spin of reality...

Keep at it, avek. Some people -perhaps even Lakefield will persist in believing that US will be acquired. There simply isn't anything worth acquiring that justifies the upfront and integration costs. Further, hasn't Republic's financing got many of the DCA and LGA slots tied up? If so, there is even less available for anyone else to bid on. As for bus' prediction that UA will buy DL, that is even more hilarious. From a network perspective, DL is simply a larger version of US - very little valuable assets other than ATL and that market could be had relatively inexpensively if you wanted to buy AirTran or if you just waited for DL to die. I expect that UA and US will both be dead long before DL.
No legacy airline can afford much of anything else at this point and they surely can't support an LBO; they can't pay their current bills, let alone something that adds more debt.

Do you have a spelling problem or what??? Also, what are you smoking?? Did you dream you were sitting and having a chat with Lakefield?? I can't imagine Lakefield talking about things United.

I have always thought UA and U would merge somehow, but with today's fuel prices, it may take take alot longer to come up with a strike price.
