CO backs out of merger, UA/US deal still on?

My thoughts on this whole thing:

6. The combined company will apply to reassign some, if not all, of the DCA slot exemptions to SFO and LAX using B757's or A321's on all of the exempted flights.

If this is the case, they would have to stay with the Boeing 757. A full A321 would probably not even clear the DCA perimiter fence or end up in the Potomac for a transcon segment.

My thoughts on this whole thing:

1. Merger announcement by the end of next week, if not this week.

2. The merged company will try like hell to get Bethune as CEO; he'll pretty much be able to name his price and terms. If Plan A is a no-go, Lakewood would fill the spot. It's best to have someone unconnected to either company stearing the ship going forward.

Gordon Bethune made a promise to the employees of Continental that he would never work for any airline that competes directly with Continental. He and his emplyees had such a great relationship that I doubt that he would ever go back on his word. The Continental that can stand alone at this point and is so admired is his legacy.
Why would he go to work for any company that would require him to attack his very own?

I imagine he will show up somewhere in aviation, but as CEO, no where but CO.

1. Money.
2. His ego. Imagine his legacy if he could turn around 2 carriers.

Well IAD/DCA/PHL are all profitable. If they dump DCA, I think IAD and PHL will complete against each other which is not good. Dumping PHL would lose key TA routes that are very profitable. I think cutting IAD would be the best out of the three.
I think that this is highly unlikely. UA carries significantly more international traffic out of IAD than US does at PHL, and at a noticeably higher average fare. IAD is a larger international market and has the facilities (new 4th runway coming) to support growth.

I think that IAD will stay largely the same with possibly some small growth from taking some small city connecting traffic from PHL. PHL will be largely the same except for dropping some low volume routes to help with the congestion problem there.

The real shrinkage will be at LAS and PHX with some shrinkage at CLT and DEN as well. It would not be surprising to see a 20% reduction in domestic flying over time, particularly is oil stays at the current price.

i don'r give a rats ass what kind of promise bethune made to continental . if the price is right he will run it . money talks.

For the record in my location the US and UA employees get along great, very friendly with one another.

Ditto for TPA. We work very well with each other for the most part and help out each other whenever the other one has problems.

So UA has a LHR Flight Attendant base i see? Hmmmm. Might have to think abou that!

It couldn't be any worse than the PIT-PHL commute than many from PIT have to endure these days. I was just at PIT a few days ago. It's so sad what has happened to that airport, its a ghost town now. :(

And God knows how any of us could have the patience to listen to the catfight that will inevitably ensue between the UA and US pilot groups. That alone is enough to give anyone a headache. It will be nasty on BOTH sides, unless employees can be mature enough to remember that decisions like these take place way over the heads of us lowly frontline folks and we don't have control over it.

Unless I am mistaken (and I know someone here will correct if I'm wrong) there would be a vote for representation since the pilot groups are now two different unions, ALPA and USAPA. I'm not sure how much of a "fight" there would be because if you combine the number of UA pilots with the number of west pilots I would think that ALPA is a sure bet to be the winning party and as a result the Nicolau award would be resurrected.

Of course, with my being a flight attendant, I have bigger questions, like will the "new" UA wear our much anticipated track suit uniforms?

Think long and hard about that one as enticing as it sounds! Even if you are maxed out on the payscale, making ends meet with the weak USD in London can be a challenge. LHR has become a very junior crewbase as all the senior crews began leaving in droves with the devaluation of the US Dollar. Same goes for overseas bases in FRA, CDG and NRT.

actually. if all the males just wore the blue shirt with the solid blue tie the vest or the blazer then we would look no different than what ual wears.
