" General Electric (GE:NYSE - commentary - research), which has a large aircraft leasing unit, is a key creditor for both carriers. The Wall Street Journal has reported GE wants to use the merger as an opportunity to pull about 60 planes and deploy them elsewhere. The aircraft lease market is strong right now, notably in Asia, where airlines are scrambling to keep up with rising passenger demand."

America West halted on expected merger
May 19, 2005 4:13:00 PM ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Shares of America West Airlines (AWA) were halted in over-the-counter trading as the market expected the carrier to announce it has agreed to merge with bankrupt U.S. Airways (UAIRQ).

I believe HP's Airbuses are getting moved. They about 60-65 right now and I can't see the Boeings(which are much older) going to anyone in the Asian marktplace right now. The 737s will be phased out as the 63 or so outstanding orders firmed, probably per the airbus financing going forward. I would like to know what regionals will get the majority of flying besides Air Wisconsin. I would also assume that the 170 and the 190 might become a workhorse for this combined entity in the near future. Both have a lot of short haul, higher-density capacity right now.

One thing that hasn't been announced is the fate of the 170s. No word from Republic, so thankfullt it doesn't look like they'll be buying the MidAtlantic division planes. Hopefully they remain in-house, it will keep a lot more jobs for USHP employees.
