Now that AWA has taken over the running of US Airways, what has it done to improve PHL? The lack of tugs, beltloaders and carts will make this holiday season as bad as last year.On top of that , we have the ridiculous sick policy where you don't get paid the first day,so to make it economically feasible, you call off for a whole week.Everyone who works for US Airways should E-mail Doug Parker and ask him what he is going to do.Remember, we still have Crellin running our operation!

Hack 73 I read alot of comments at this thread which I think will address your comment check it out

http://www.usaviation.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=22139

I agree Christmas will be a problem but everything leading up to it will be ugly due to equipment shortage. Man power has increased but the knowledge and experience is still a real problem.

The company has no time to fool around and they are in for a public relations meltdown like last year but only worse.

Management will have no one to blame except themselves this year because they have been warned about the problems and they are doing nothing to correct it.

Remeber you said the magic word--Remeber, we still have AL Crelin running the operations.

I dont think anything will change for this season except may be worse than last season! Until they get rid of the crooked uncle al, I cant see how things will improve in phl

If you don't want Christmas 2004 to happen again I suggest that all of the Philly ramp people start sending an email to Doug with a specific list of equipment you need to do you job. If you spend as much time emailing Doug as you do on the 30+page thread on HP people on the ramp in Philly maybe you would get some much needed equipment. If you start now hopefully you can get the equipment.

Bottom line is that you need to let Doug know specificily what you need now. Also you have to remember that the customer (not the company or the union) that pays your salary and the customer will not forget the hassle of last christmas. As I have stated before you have to think like a customer. They do not care what your problems are on the ramp and you cannot hold them or their bags hostage. If it happens again this you most of them will not come back and then what are you going to do for jobs. Also make your union leaders get involved this is what they should be doing anyway. Thats what you pay them to do is look out for you and get you the equipment you need to complete your tasks. HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE TO YOUR EQUIPMENT NEEDS!!!!!

Get going now and let Doug know!!! douglas.parker@usairways

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Doug,
I would like to request at least 1 beltloader, 1 tug, a couple carts, an available pushback, a headset, and a new hire that will show up on gate B-15.
Thank-you.

If you think that Doug doesn't know what is going on in Philly.....you've have too much kool-aid!!

The following is my response in "Getting ugly at PHL":
If you don't have the equipment then you don't have the equipment. Do what you can but do it at a SAFE pace. If you have only one beltloader then empty and fill one bin at a time. It is all you can do and be expected to do. Do everything safely and in accordance with a ground operations manual. Follow that manual to the letter. Never run on the ramp. That's not safe - WALK. Don't hurry because that can lead to injuries or worse. Haste makes waste. Look around to make sure there are no cuts or gouges in the bin floor. Is the rubber seal coming out in the bin floors? Look for hydraulic and fuel leaks. If you note any of those call maintenance even if you are not sure. A stitch in time saves nine. If you have any muscle cramps be sure to work them out real good because that can lead to back injuries and such. Just stop what you are doing and work that cramp off.

Does everyone understand?

If anyone who can provide sufficient, well-trained staff and equipment in good repair understands please act. Talking is not the solution.

Just out of curiosity, I’ve always wondered why airlines use the TUG. Couldn’t a large volume fleet purchase of Ford or Chevy pickup trucks with a proper hitch replace the tugs? Not only would a pickup truck be able to pull baggage carts but also you’ve got the space to place some limited numbers of baggage in the rear of the pickup. Is a TUG that much less expensive to purchase and maintain than a pickup truck?

I believe it is a durability issue and size. And US has differant manufactures it buys from for its "TUGS".

a TUG is a pretty simple and inexpensive piece of equipment compared to a truck. Also, a TUG is much smaller, more manueverable, and safer around airplanes. Using pickups would cause a lot of traffic jams, jack knifes, and ramp rash.

One hopes management intends to avoid another Christmas meltdown.

This means making certain PHL has the resources to accomplish the tasks management has laid out in PHL.

X number of flights translates into Y amount of carts, Z amount of beltloaders, an W amount of man hours - not rocket science here.

This also means management holding employees accountable for performance, good and bad.

Most employees do a good job with little to no supervision, although the rash of newbies will skew that trend. Some need more diligent supervision, and a few need to be shown the door.

If the powers that be do not manage resources and performance, THEY are accountable for Meltdown II.

Otherwise, why pay them the grande dinero?

Hey guys in Philly...sorry to hear about your shortages there, sounds like a pain and hard to get work done. This may explain why some America West Flights have appeared to be "put on hold" by ground lately in Philly. The rumor mill here is that workers in Philly are disgruntled and put America West planes at the back of the line for on and off loading, marshalling etc. Is there any truth to this? or is it just that you are short equipment? I'll pass on my e-mail to Al..to also put a bug in his ear as a concerned employee, but it doesn't sound like you have too much confidence in the guy...whats the deal? We're not familiar with him here in Phoenix. By the way......they just took over, the have lots of legacy US Airways messes to clean up, give them a little time too...

How is it economically feasible to call out sick for a whole week when the max pay
you'll get is 50%? On the 5th sick day does it revert to 40 hours pay? If true
I can't believe Jerry Glass let that one slip through.

Pickup trucks damage carts after a certain speed. Repairing trucks is more expensive than tug repair. A tug consists only of an engine and a very simple transmission. No air conditioning to repair or service.
