Judge blocks Northwest attendants strike

U.S. District Judge Victor Marrero said he will issue an injunction that allows time for him to examine the case. He said Northwest Airlines Corp. made a \"persuasive case\" that a delay in any strike was necessary so that the legal issues could be resolved.

He said that while the injury to flight attendants would be to delay their ability to strike, \"far greater injuries exist to Northwest and the public by permitting the strike to commence at this point.\" Northwest, already operating under bankruptcy protection, has said a strike could kill it.

During this temporary injunction you FAs could honor the AMFA picket lines.........just a thought.

Yup, when pigs fly.
Maybe now the rest of the afl/cio unions will issue strong worded sympathy letters on how they 'should' have supported them but now they can't.

Just had a quick thought. The judge blocked the fa from striking and not carrying out chaos. So can the fa implement it?

Have you read the injunction? Do you have any idea what it says?

I haven't got ahold of a copy yet but you can be certain that it enjoins the FAs from any organized job action, no matter the name.

No judge wants to make a decision as big as this one because they know it could very well end up in the Supreme Court, as it probably should. There is way too much confusion about which laws trump the others and everyone gets whipped around in the confusion.

And NHBB before you pin this on Bush, remember that the US has 3 branches of government and the Executive branch is very often at odds with the judicial branch. It is the courts that are holding this situation in their hands.

Can't stop a mass resignation, I think, not so sure anymore that slavery was abolished.

I believe that ThirdSeatHero has it right.

The NW AFA could simply honor the AMFA picket line, but they will not because it is not in their agenda (they haven't even collected a month of dues yet). :p

And they think they should collect dues why? Because they are doing such a fine job. LOL-too bad its not funny.

AFA waited and prayed for this day. If the judge had not blocked strike action, what would have been the next delay tactic?

AFA had its chance for weeks to show NWA they are serious. A chance to show they are a force and to be treated fairly.

Labor Unions at American Airlines Issue Statement of Support for Northwest Airlines' Flight Attendants; 'We urge Northwest Airlines' Management to Reconsider Its Actions'

FORT WORTH, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 25, 2006--The three unions at American Airlines (NYSE:AMR) -- the Allied Pilots Association, the Association of Professional Flight Attendants and the Transport Workers Union -- issued the following statement today in support of Northwest Airlines' flight attendants:

"As part of its Chapter 11 reorganization, Northwest Airlines' management has imposed a new contract upon that carrier's flight attendants that contains steep pay cuts and significant work rule changes. The flight attendants have responded by announcing their intention to engage in limited work stoppages, beginning as soon as tonight, to protest the non-consensual nature of the new contract.

"As we await a ruling today by U.S. District Judge Victor Marrero in New York regarding whether the flight attendants will be permitted to proceed with their planned work stoppages, APA would like to express its support for the flight attendants' efforts to resist the imposition of a new contract against their will and we urge Northwest Airlines' management to reconsider its actions. A consensual resolution to this impasse is in the best interests of all concerned."

Founded in 1963, the Allied Pilots Association -- the largest independent pilot union in the U.S. -- is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas. APA represents the 13,000 pilots of American Airlines, including 2,890 pilots on furlough. The furloughs began shortly after the September 11, 2001 attacks. Also, several hundred American Airlines pilots are on full-time military leave of absence serving in the armed forces. The union's Web site address is www.alliedpilots.org

Founded in 1977, the Association of Professional Flight Attendants is the nation's only independent flight attendant union. It represents more than 22,620 flight attendants of American Airlines, including 4,084 furloughed flight attendants. The APFA's Web site is www.apfa.org.

Founded in 1934, the Transport Workers Union represents nearly 125,000 workers in the nation's transportation industries, including 55,000 workers in the airline and government service industry in virtually all Class and Crafts. The Air Transport Division represents 42 Locals with 59 labor contracts. The Airline Division Web site is www.twuatd.org.

American Airlines is the nation's largest passenger carrier.

If the AFA is serious about some type of work action have they thought about working to the rule. You know where FA's stop accepting overtime among other things. I don't know how effective it will be but has anyone brought it up?
