MANAGEMENT OUTSOURCES FLYING TO CHAMPION (8/10/05)
Several weeks ago ALPA learned from pilots at Champion Airlines that NWA management was considering using Champion to perform NWA flying to prevent disruptions in service related to a possible AMFA job action. We subsequently confirmed this with NWA management and advised management that such flying by Champion would violate the Scope provisions of the pilot contract.

Earlier today we learned management had Champion operate a NWA flight this morning from DTW to DFW. ALPA views this action by NWA management as a flagrant and serious violation of the Pilot Agreement and has already submitted a grievance which we will pursue through expedited arbitration as provided in our contract.

We have been in regular contact with the (ALPA) pilots at Champion Airlines since they first advised us of management’s plan. They continue to be forthcoming and helpful. Please remember that our dispute in this matter is with NWA management, not with the pilots of Champion Airlines. They are simply “caught in the middleâ€￾ and have no legal basis to refuse such assignments. Any treatment of Champion pilots that reflects otherwise is unwarranted and inappropriate.

ALPA will be monitoring this issue. If you become aware of any NWA flying, passenger or cargo, being performed by another operator, please contact the ALPA Safety Operations Center (800-NWA-ALPA ext. 374 or e-mail [email protected]) and provide them with details. We will provide you with additional information on this issue as it becomes available.

There were apparently *lots* of NW flights operated by Champion today.

NW 1983 DTW-LAN, NW 663 EWR-DTW, NW 1883 LEX-DTW, NW 766 DTW-ABE, NW 458 FAR-MSP, NW 698 DFW-DTW...

is champion an alpa carrier? and if so is alpa and mr woerth just rolling over? is alpa a union? perhaps teamsters and broken knee caps would be a better solution.

Those old gas-guzzlin 3-man 727's have got to be costing NW a pretty penny to charter. I'd bet Champion isn't making any charitable contributions to their cause.

Why not save money and do the right thing at the same time by settling with the unions?

Steeland knows he's rapidly running out of time with the current crisis (post-911 downturn) and with an ever-improving economy it's now or never to break the unions. Sorry Doug, better luck next recession.

Because there's no middle ground to be had here?....

Settling with the union means that either the union gives away 50%+ of their members, or that the company continues to insource heavy maintenance, which they no longer want to do.

I don't see where either side is going to bend here.

In the airline industry managements perception of "bending" is "give me whatever I tell you to".

AMFA offered ways to save on costs the company flat out refused.

At AA the company trumped up their losses then demanded and got a 25% compensation reduction, the TWU didnt even try to "negotiate". When you add in the layoffs etc they actually got more than that in cost reductions. But then again at AA people are quitting every time you turn around.

sent the above info to nwa alpa. the reply follow:

I just checked to verify our information on the Champion flying the only
flights that operated were DTW-DFW-DTW/10 August. The other flights were
not flown by Champion. Thanks for the intel. As of last night NWA has
agreed to cease and desist with respect to Champion wet-leasing,
hopefully they will abide by that.

It just cannot be cheap to have Champion doing these flights for NWA. I surely hope this is resolved before the 20th. I will be in Hawai'i for a week, watching and hoping for the best. I did buy a ticket on another carrier to be covered. CYA. Just my thoughts.........

I have a NW flight from MEM to MSP to FAR on Labor Day weekend. I frankly don't care whether it's operated by NW or Champion Air. Actually, Champion Air would be kinda fun since I haven't flown on a 727 since the majors retired them.

You people need to wake up and face reality. The days of overpaid union jobs and featherbedding are gone.

js, if you wish to stir something try putting your hands in your pocket. You are willing to fly a struck carrier makes you a scab's cousin. You haven't flown on a 727 lately? I wonder when the last time one of the future scab workers have worked on one. I'm sure there are all sorts of spare parts for these scabs to troublshoot with.

Oh that's rich. Now anyone who flies Northwest while scabs work it are associated with the scabs? You going to be a jerk to customers now?

One of the stupider takes on this board, ever.
