MANAGEMENT OUTSOURCES FLYING TO CHAMPION (8/10/05)
Several weeks ago ALPA learned from pilots at Champion Airlines that NWA management was considering using Champion to perform NWA flying to prevent disruptions in service related to a possible AMFA job action. We subsequently confirmed this with NWA management and advised management that such flying by Champion would violate the Scope provisions of the pilot contract.
Earlier today we learned management had Champion operate a NWA flight this morning from DTW to DFW. ALPA views this action by NWA management as a flagrant and serious violation of the Pilot Agreement and has already submitted a grievance which we will pursue through expedited arbitration as provided in our contract.
We have been in regular contact with the (ALPA) pilots at Champion Airlines since they first advised us of management’s plan. They continue to be forthcoming and helpful. Please remember that our dispute in this matter is with NWA management, not with the pilots of Champion Airlines. They are simply “caught in the middle†and have no legal basis to refuse such assignments. Any treatment of Champion pilots that reflects otherwise is unwarranted and inappropriate.
ALPA will be monitoring this issue. If you become aware of any NWA flying, passenger or cargo, being performed by another operator, please contact the ALPA Safety Operations Center (800-NWA-ALPA ext. 374 or e-mail [email protected]) and provide them with details. We will provide you with additional information on this issue as it becomes available.
