Bye bye Tulsa

This was another gem put in the contract by the TWU in the 90s.  A shut down of the maint. base for Christmas.  So AA decides when we are to take a week of our vacation.  If you think for one second that this is a benefit then you're wrong.  We either take a week of vacation or we are forced to take it without pay.  This is a lockout and nothing else.
I guess you can look at it that way, and with all the outsourcing they do now that argument has more weight to it but out here on the line we would not object to AA shutting down line operations for Christmas week and forcing us to take Vacation. Thats the first week to close out on the bid every year. Sure they would lose a lot of premium revenue but they don't share it with us anyway, we only get half pay for being away from our families on Christmas day and there is no profit sharing either.

Great point....There are people who do not even celebrate Christmas who would give anything for the week off.....even CSO.

I understand your way of thinking on this Bob, but when we allow the company to decide that we will take a week of vacation during Christmas aren't we giving up something?  What's next?  AA decides to shut down the maint. base at another week during the year?  I realize many would love to have this week off but when it's your choice that is one thing.  In Tulsa we have no choice.  It is a lockout and the TWU allows it.  Plain and simple.

Tulsa's been deciding things for a long time!

two things here.

1) I would be very pissed if my company forced me to take a day off any time of the year. Love spending the day with the family and such, but no way would I want they company saying what days I "have" to take. (especially a week!. I would be more tolerable for a day, maybe two....but a week is a bunch of crap)

2) this line v base is going to destroy the craft. Good job, your playing the game they want yall to play. Not only will you keep dragging AA down, but you'll be pulling the rest of the industry right down the sh*tter with you. (and for the record, I support geo pay to a point)

edit: not directing number two at you Bob, just saying......

I do not know how they do it for the mechanics but Fleet Service always asked for volunteers.

You are absolutely right that this is a lockout and has some risk involved on the part of labor.

As far as the loss in pay.......from what I have seen in the past American Airlines has always offered a lot of overtime leading up to base shutdown. You should be able to cover the "cost" of the shutdown very easily with available overtime.

Yes, I agree with this. But if I'm forced to save a week of vacation, then they shouldn't have volunteer lists to work that week.
Doesn't shutdown mean close and lock the doors?
The only people that should be there are the ones to support line maintenance and take care of the buildings.

Please keep a thought for the thousands of your co-workers in ACS who have to take days, weeks, and even months off at a time...

You are correct.  That is why I don't work it and I wish nobody would.

ahem, as i have told other.....vote yes.

of course, with the crap the IAM and TWU has been doing at UA/AA......not sure how that will help now. The companies want to fallow the Europe model (no airline employees work the ramp, its all contract) and the unions have been doing a fabulous job of helping them get to that point. Its a sad sad day to see Delta's number of mainline stations comparable or larger than union carriers.

just like the maintenance unions are doing with the line v base garbage

Cry me a river, AA is so evil for FORCING you to be home at Christmas and New Years, I bet AA forced you to have Saturday and Sunday off too. Making you be off with your kids during their Christmas break, and then making you go to parties with your wife on New Year's Eve, how dare they.

Why don't you say what probably really happened, the local 514 president worked out a deal for Xmas break and sat, sun off decades ago and it always stayed in place.

Unless you think it's great punching in at work at 0600 on Xmas and New Year's Day morning, or you're kissing your wife happy new year at 2100 when you're walking out the door to go to work. Quite complaining and be thankful that your local took care of you.
