"Brief aside, it would be interesting to see what different mechanics prefer. If the most senior guys got to choose their work at the beginning of a shift. hmm..."
Actually here in BOS we do pick what we work. Third shift is broken down into three crews. Each crew has from one to three guys per set of off days. Guys pick what aircraft to work strarting with guys on Friday. They typically take the easiest workload aircraft while the guys just comming off weekend get the suck jobs.
It is intresting what people will pick. What one guy sees as an easy job the next guy might see it as unfamiliar or even boring. Sometimes we pick an aircraft because we know the tires and brakes are well within limits. It is a crappy night and I don't want any surprises with a dual brake change on different axles.
I've found most don't shy away a type of aircraft too much. The possible exception being the CRJ. I attribute this more to working a Comair contract and unfamiliarty than dislike of the airplane.
