Another Brilliant Phl Manager

The baggage problem at this airline is out of control and has to be responsible for some of financial results that we continue to produce.
Golf clubs continue to get shipped to MYR, ILM and CHS by truck since the RJ's can't carry both pax and clubs. This has been going on for over two years but we continue to use RJ's where they can't provide the lift.
MHT recently had 80 plus pax arrive from PHL with 10 bags on board. That weekend they delivered over 200 bags at $50 plus per bag in the Boston area.
Recent PHL-BVT was delayed. When the Capt asked what the problem was the Ramp Super indicated that they did not know where the bags were. They left with no bags and a full load of paxs.

It has been over 7 months since our melt down in PHL. Mr. Parker needs a heads up.
 
Kid, VERY VALID POINT. How long will the PHL and CLT ( mainly Sat night ) baggage problems continue. And we are all stupid enough to think our finances are totally related to fuel costs.

Well be sure to check out the PAWOBS for today when USDaily is out tomorrow. They will probably be astronomical again. PHL had a problem AGAIN today with bag belt or TSA (not sure which since I never heard the end result). Anyway, we started out with minimal claims and when 2 PHL flights came in, we took about 70 claims from just these 2 PHL flights. We had over 100 claims this afternoon by the time I left and the flights werent even sold out.
Then with PHL ATC/weather problems were advised we could only take 135 people and * 27 * bags due to fuel. This probably means another 100-125 bags left off since we had 140 people checked in on the flight heading North.

Does anyone else think its time for the DOT to look into PHL (both/either TSA and the constant baggage belt fiascos) since they both seem to be a regular occurance? You'd think that with all the letters they must be getting about PHL baggage problems, someone in the govt would want to see what is actually going on there. Also, is the mayors brother still in charge of the belt system? If so, does anyone know the number for a good investigative news team in PHL that might like to check into the story of how much is being spent to constantly repair the system since it seems to break down regularly?

In CLT it will continue as long as they bring more island flights in & try to connect them to the same bank. It does NOT work! WAKE UP "Uncle Al".

Many outstations "served" by RJs out of PHL have "mini meltdowns" several times each week, if not every day. The staff in these outstations are getting tired of hearing the excuses from PHL(understaffiing, newhires, bag belt breakdowns, etc) and would like to hear more about what will be done to fix these problems.

With the exception of the bag belt issue - which should affect just originating, not connecting bags - other hubs/focus cities that feed these oustations are also dealing with understaffing and lotsa newhires at express/MDA. Yet Focus cities XXX and ZZZ and hub YYY somehow are able to get the bags on the same flight as the people! The employees in these oustations - many of whom have been "mainline expressed" - shudder at the expenses caused by PAOWB after PAWOB. The braintrust at CCY should be shuddering at hese expenses, too.

Sure the delivery costs and itnerim expenses can be quantfied. But what about the lost goodwill and lost future bookings?

Shirl, the "rolling hub" puts alot of stress on a marginal system because a large percentage of connecting bags do find their way onto the originating belt.Also, the express workforce isn't bad, not great, but not bad. MDA workers are awful plus the EMB-170 can' hold much: instant PAWOBs and a bunch.

Thanks for elucidating that issue. What ever happened to the "new and improved" bag system the City of Brotherly Love (or was it the Mayor's brother) was going to intstall?

If the Philly Airpoty Authority is hosing its number one tenant, perhaps the company can withhold lease payments. (It might not need to be done using the bankruptcy. Many states (not sure about PA) allow an agrieved tennant to send rent payments to a state or city agency which will keep the money in an escrow account until the landlord/tennant dispute is resolved. Sure it's mostly intended to deal with landlords who won't fix a broken sewer line, but I'm sure our very expensive legal team could make it work)

Anyhow, I digress. We need solutions, folks. If the rolling hub is straining the bag belt system, can the bags be staged someplace else - where they won't be forgotten - until it's time for them to be loaded?

Is there not some way for the Express/Mainline wall to be broken?

IMO, US should look at UA in ORD...as of last winter UA mainline tookover all CS and ramp functions for Express at ORD.

Given the "unique" nature of (and challenges presented by) the PHL operation, mainline should handle all of PHL's operations. The marginally higher labor costs can be easily recouped in the savings from duplicate management/admin staff, reduction in PAWOBs and improved customer service.

It's too late for that.....PHL would have to hire 100's more off the street......who would apply? The same people working F-con now.
Same workers slightly higher pay.
No problems solved.
