AMFA Mechanics contract.08/ 2012

So how come the pilots and FA got to vote on international routes and the -800s? Dont they get extra pay for working basically the same AC, when the mechs are just expected to get ETOPS certified for nothing? Wont the mechs have to go downline for the international trips sometime or another? Did we get to vote on it? Seems kind of messed up to me. Sure hope we are asking for something for this added responsibility.

We could all give up our run/Taxi and wait for the company to realize what it's worth

I believe that in our contract that it says somewhere that if we are unable to do the job then they can call in contract to do the job. So if nobody had a run/taxi and a plane needed a run up in say El Paso and there were no engine/Taxi qualified personnel withen in the system then they could call out contract MX to change MEC and do the run. Don't get me wrong I'm all about extra pay for my Run/Taxi, AW and HUD. But we must be careful how we approach this.

Spot on Sir, Mx Ctrl will just do a one time authorization and get the plane out of town. Same for MELs. The planes will just come back for you to fix.

That's not entirely true, maybe so for the run/taxi portion of it but to upgrade and maintain CATIII, per the MPM, it has to be a SWA tech authorized and trained on the equipment. Granted, the company could just try and change the verbiage in the MPM but if we were to add that to our scope, let's say no non-contract employees can run/taxi any A/C within a 800 mile radius of any MX station, then they would have no choice but to offer incentives. We take on a lot extra resposibility when we authorize a HUD or autoland or run/taxi an A/C. If everyone had to do it then okay, but you have some guys that refuse to get qualified in anything and they just ride the clock when they are done while you're out there performing all the checks and generally doing more work! Don't get me wrong, I'm all for doing everything and getting the job done, but getting stuck doing it night after night while others go relax is pretty frustrating. That's just my gripe about the whole situation.

AvTech, I was just responding to the Run/Taxi portion, not CAT III. FWIW, the MPM is about to go under a complete re-write... Hang on guys, it could get interesting!

Here's what I say. If the company wants the 4th line back, then they need to be willing to bring the 4 lines of maint (at least) back to the USA, if not into Dallas heavy maint. If they expect the 4th line, then it would take more than they are willing to offer to get it. SWA thought it would only take a few thousand to get the 4th line, low, and behold, they found out it would take a freakin mountain to get the 4th line back. My personal opinion is the 4th line will remain. From what I hear the offer to stop the line was rejected from HQ finance dept..
Now, we still need to get reimbursed for allowing the 4 lines to go to Elsolvador and the huge amount of money that the company has saved for doing so. Not to mention the fueling and push back folks. As well as the overtime and double time paid rest that they got back last contract. --- Gentlemen, NOW is the time. Stay UNITED!! Stay strong, and work safe...

I've been hearing some rumors on the floor about the possibility of the FAA reducing work limit hours down from 24 to 14-18 hours. I was curious if the company is pushing us hard to give up paid rest and double time or not pressing the issue hoping this might be true so they can rid us of it under an FAA mandate? If that did happen and we fought tooth and nail for it by giving up other things to keep it it would be a huge loss. Also I feel with the amount of new hires coming in, it seems the company is planning on increasing manpower to point that overtime will rarely needed and almost eliminating our double time and paid rest. It will be very interesting to see what exactly they will be asking from us besides the 4th line and more outsourcing. I wish we could get transcripts of the meetings

Duty limits changes have been long overdue for our Craft

How long has the 24hr rule been around? I was under the impression it was around our last contract in 2008

We've always had paid rest in the contract, but it didn't include guys working on a day trade, so you had mechanics here in DAL (probably elsewhere as well) who would be on the clock for 2 days straight with a combination of Daytrades and overtime. The 24 hr rule was the company's way of getting these guys off the clock.. pay em and send them home. I really thought AMFA should have been in the forefront on this issue with the FAA. I know this goes against the grain of collecting as much cash as we can get before its gone. IMO Southwest needs to hire and staff enough mechanics so that there is not a need for us to work a bunch of overtime and risk being unsafe because of fatigue

CFR 121.377 - 24 hrs straight is insane and asking for a mistake! Just MO.
