Now the question is do they pull forward any of the existing orders for 777's for early delivery to handle the new route.

I disagree - the real question is whether or not Arpey and the board of directors will pull their collective head out of their a$$ - they've got the pilots to deal with. it doesn't make any difference if we've got the routes or not unless the pilots will fly them.

Another stroke of (mis)management dumba$$ as before will sink the deal.

This is only a proposal, not an award.

AP- Delta Gets OK for China Flights
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters announced Tuesday that Delta's Atlanta-to-Shanghai route could begin in April.

Peters also announced the government has awarded United Airlines the right to fly nonstop from San Francisco to Guangzho in 2008.

She proposed new service to China starting in 2009 involving four other airlines. The proposed routes are open for public comment before a final decision is made.

They include a Continental Airlines route from New York to Shanghai; a Detroit-to-Shanghai route on Northwest Airlines; an American Airlines route from Chicago to Beijing; and a U.S. Airways route from Philadelphia to Beijing.

Peters said she hopes to make a decision on these routes soon.

The two that were delivered in 2006 were really in anticipation of the 2007 award (DFW-PEK) that AA didn't get, so those airplanes could always be removed from wherever they've been assigned (S America?). But with new ORD-EZE and possibly more MIA-EZE and Brazil flying, perhaps AA will accelerate two more so it can keep the existing 777 schedule.

I know DFW to Peking is beyond the current scope clause but isn't there enough ORD to China service to warrant DFW to China service.

Doubtful, but a good connecting point for AMR traffic.. I am guessing the ORD frequencies will be it for awhile for AA... In the meantime DAL and US and UAL will probably get more from ATL, PHL, AND LAX, in assition to the ones just announced.

It is essentially an award. Other airlines have a few weeks to protest the decission before it becomes final. Unless Maxjet can convince DOT that their application is better suited, AA got Beijing. I expect 777 deliveries to be pushed forward for this route.
Call it what you want, but the route award is tentative and subject to change.

This is what TheStreet.com has to say:

While the 2008 awards are definite, the 2009 awards are tentative, with final decisions expected shortly after allowing for public comment. The 2009 awards would become available on March 25.

In selecting the 2009 routes, the Transportation Department rejected a variety of requests. For instance, it turned down Delta's bid for an Atlanta to Beijing route.

"By the time the 2009 frequencies are available for use, [Delta] will have only been operating in the U.S.-China market for approximately one year," the DOT said. "Unlike American and Continental, it will not have had as much time to fully establish itself in the U.S.-China market."

Among new entrants, it rejected a request by MAXJet for a Seattle to Shanghai route in favor of the US Airways Philadelphia route. "US Airways would be in a better position to compete effectively with the incumbents" because of its superior connections, the department said.

The government also denied United's attempt at Los Angeles to Beijing service, noting that the carrier already has 50% of all U.S-China service.

"We tentatively believe that giving American and Continental the opportunity to offer additional service will allow them to compete more effectively with [United] ," the DOT said.

Open Mouth Insert Foot. Maybe you should do a little research before you scream AA Pilots wont fly it. And I quote maybe you should pull your head out of you a$$.

Watch out AA the great Oracle of aviation and and all things American has spoken.

Since that is true, can you tell us how many dot awards have been changed after an award has been announced?

It hasn't happened in a major award case in at least 17 years that I can recall. The last one I know of was when AA was approved for ORD-NRT, and UAL lobbied hard to get the decision reversed in their favor. AA had even made a deal to lease 744's from CP so that the equipment matched what UAL had proposed, but

So... it's unlikely that there will be a reversal at this point. If there is, it's likely that US would lose their service in favor of someone else, since they had the weakest business case out of those awarded.
