Hello...

I thought we should have at least 5700 furloughed F/A.
How come now is only 5500 ??

Where did those people go?

Furloughed on 02JUL03 = 3123__total on furlough = 6,150
Recalled on 01DEC03 = 390____total on furlough = 5760
Recalled on 01JUL04 = 233_____total on furlough = 5527

Not all of those recalled returned, of course, but they lost their recall rights and are no longer counted as furloughees.

Some of those who have quit or retired are on the furlough list. For example, between June 2003 and June 2004 128 TWA people on the furlough list ahead of me quit or retired. That's a good chunk of the "missing people" right there.

If there is someone on the list who has resigned or retired then that means they were not processed before the June Seniority List was developed after the annual seniority shuffle.

However, you can assume that there have been at least 546 resignations or retirements processed since 01DEC03.

The numbers I posted earlier were taken from the APFA website. But, they were correct as of 01DEC03--the total on furlough = 5760. I simply subtracted the 233 that were recalled 01JUL04 from that number to get to the 5527 number.

So, you may ask, where did Jim come up with the 546 resignations and retirements (could also be deaths, but let's hope not.) Well, I'll tell you.

The Seniority list published each June is developed after the June seniority reshuffle in the computer. The seniority numbers are absolutely sequential from F/A #1 to F/A #24852. The seniority number of the most junior ACTIVE flight attendant is 19601--the most senior furloughee is 19602. If you subtract 19601 from 24852, this should give you the total number of furloughees as on June 04. That number is 4981. 5527 - 4981 = 546.

Now as almost 3 months have passed since the list was created, I can tell you these numbers are no longer valid. After all the attrition for June, July, and August has been 385 including the 137 who did not return from overage leave at the end of June. The people who retired and most of the resignations in June are on the June 04 Seniority List. Under pension rules you can only retire on the last day of the month; so, they would have still be "active" in June regardless of whether or not they were flying.

(I deleted the last sentence of this post. I realized that I had subtracted the number of active resignations and retirements from the furlough total. Not good logic.)

Jim - it appears you understand this, so I will post another question:

There are some that are waiting to retire after the 777 payoff. Did you state that they can not retire until the last day of October ? (If so - How long does it take to process the retirement papers?) I was hoping for some recalls during November. There doesn't appear to be a recall scheduled for October. Maybe they are waiting to see how many retire in Oct - so that they have a better estimate of the amount of people needed to recall.

Surely they are not going thru the holidays without recalls. Can they make it during the holidays without recalls?

Sure we can. It will hurt, but we have pulled it off each year and I have no doubt we will get screwed again this year.

And for all you folks who get sick durring the holidays, you really should take better care of your selves so you could enjoy the holidays more.

I didn't express that very well. People who retire or quit from the furlough list do NOT show up in the company's attrition numbers. What I meant to say was that those who quit or retire from furlough status are no longer on the furlough list, therefore the actual number of furloughees is smaller than the actual number of people furloughed.

Kirkpatrick:

How far down the list are you from recall. Based on your post, you seem to be a man in the know. The reason I ask is that i would like to fly with you one of these days.

I believe that there will be a recall for 01DEC. I heard from one source that it would be as high as 600 f/as, but I doubt that it will be that many. Unless they are planning to reassign everybody in Dec., I don't see how they can not do a recall. The attrition rate has been steady at over 80 f/as per month for the last 3 months. It will be interesting to see if this is the new "normal" attrition rate.

strange thing also is that out hi8's were getting a monthly update, so to speak, and since the 06-2004 annual shuffle, they have not done a monthly shuffle. A classmate of mine resigned at the end of her OL, but her empl number is still in the system, just as inactive. usually, they would delete the number completely in the monthly update, making it an invalid.

I hope there is a recall soon. We are really shory F/A's in the system, but it appears AA would rather work short F/A's then do a recall. Although, I am sure F/A Mikey and Miaami would disagree that we are short F/A's. They seem to disagree with everything I post on here. Then again they are based in Miami where there is an overage. They don't seem understand that LGA is now covering the MIA base when we are on reserve...Go Figure!

What Unity?

================================================

Garfield(the movie)1966,
There you go, Stirring the "holiday sick list pot".

FYI, I had an "old timer" in my neighborhood say that if the trees have a very full set of leaves on them, that the winter will be long/cold and hard.

Well garfield, the trees here in the northeast are VERY FULL.

I have never heard that expression - however, just a few weeks ago I told a friend that the trees were not as full as normally. So, I hope that expression is true - because that would mean that the northwest part of Missouri would be fair.

BTW - this has been the best summer ever for my area. I only used my air-conditioner mayber 10-15 days. Lots of temperatures in the 70-80 degrees. Only 1 day over 100. The nights down between 50-70.

However, back to the subject of recalls - I hope that AA remembers that there are many furloughees ready and willing to return. Give the crews a rest and not wear them out over the holidays. I can just see it now - AA "wearing" the f/a's out, reversing over the holidays rather than call people back. For the furloughees - Enjoy the holidays this year - it may be the last one to enjoy the complete season at home, stay warm. Everyone (both working f/a's and furloughees) remember money is not everything - enjoy your family - there is not guarantee for tomorrow! You will remember memories more than you will the money you made during the winter of 2004-2005!

Happy Holidays!
