The story I heard is that when WN was looking at purchasing AT, they talked to Boeing about the 717's and after learning the spec's, they told Boeing they didn't want them in the fleet.  Boeing hunted for a buyer and it just happened to be Delta.  Now WN has been an extremely loyal and has purchased how many 737's?  So before someone starts throwing around 100Million dollar figure's, if that's to be believed to begin with. Boeing threw some money in the kitty to help the sale.

Putting them on the west coast may be helpful to Delta but WN does have a steady stream of flights from LAX, BUR, SNA, ONT into LAS.  Add in substantially lower fuel costs, remember that WN will be paying roughly 1.90 a gallon in Q1 and  DL will be paying 2.45-2.50 will help WN defend their turf.

I'm sure that some of those AirTran pilots are crying when they cash their checks.
And Delta owns a refinery...

Fantastic numbers coming in for 4th Q and full year 2014.  AT has almost paid for itself already.  Record PS of 355 mil.  Full year broke the 1-Bil mark for fist time in history.  Expectations are even greater in 2015. Happy reading for all:

Southwest Airlines rakes in $404M in record Q4 as jet fuel prices plunge

Southwest Airlines tops $1 billion in annual profits for first time
And here is some more good news and numbers;

Southwest Airlines Price Target Raised to $64.00 at Imperial ...

For someone that supposedly loves facts and only wants to seriously discuss, someone that cheers constantly for his/her favorite airline sure doesn't like that fact or that AA and WN are both un-hedged for 2015.

BTW, I LUV that 64.00 target.

As another aside, during yesterday's interview with Crammer and Kelly announced the estimated fuel cost, Crammer and others thought that WN was saving 500Million for the year but when Kelly said it was for Q1, there is an audible gasp.

that's all great and I don't disagree.

just leave it that DL wanted the planes and WN didn't. They negotiated a deal with Boeing as an intermediary.

both carriers are achieving their strategic goals by swapping assets.

It is a win-win just like WN's pulldown of ATL... some people just can't seem to acknowledge that.

which is profitable.

DL's fuel problem is hedges, not the refinery.

and DL is saving over $2B on fuel even with the bad hedges.

in case you missed it, the Middle East is a basket case and is getting messier by the minute.

The Middle East could melt down in a minute and owning a refinery and being hedged could be more strategically valuable than you might ever want to acknowledge.

Thx 700, you beat me to it.
As far as WT thinks SWA is running from Delta in Atl here's an article proving him wrong.  Now that the merger is done and the other focused cities are up and running, SWA will now focus on ATL.  If I were to guess, SWA will eventually be above what AT was flying from ATL.  The length of time is all dependent on how quick we can get aircraft from Boeing and the used market, as currently SWA has many, many purchasers on the road looking at numerous used aircraft.  Don't worry there WT, little ole SWA probably won't even put a dent in Delta's operations.  Look at it just like the the one in Dallas as SWA has taken market share but not enough to do any damage to AA over at DFW.  ATL here we come with a brand new campaign to focus on Atlanta flyers.

Southwest focuses on Atlanta in new campaign

the article says nothing about WN retaining the number of flights or seats it had in ATL - because that didn't happen.

WN has a smaller network than FL/WN have had in ATL for years.

they are far more focused on the local market but they care competitng in the markets they do serve against far fewer frequencies that FL had - and frequency does matter to higher value business travelers.

I predict that it will not be long before WN makes another round of cuts... having a couple of flights per day against 4 times or more offered on DL won't endear WN to the market, esp. since DL does offer competitive fares to WN.

Feel free to believe that WN will have as many flights as FL had - it simply will not happen and WN isn't really interested in doing that. You are simply hung up on having to admit that someone else was right.

WN wanted into ATL and is there... they won't have a presence large enough to challenge DL in many cities over time. There will be more cities cut but WN will have a presence in ATL as the #2 carrier and will not have to compete with anyone else for that spot.

WN has far more profitable places to grow and they can get enough of the ATL market to be a viable nationwide competitor.

WN simply does not have large operations in other carrier hubs... that has been the case as long as WN has been around. WN is not going to change that now.

you just couldn't leave well enough alone, could you?Given that DL is using those 717s to enter key markets in the west where WN has been strong - you do realize that LAX-LAS was one of WN's first routes in the western US? - perhaps WN should have just paid to park them.instead they paid DL $100M to reconfigure the aircraft to DL specs.and while you pat the former FL employees on the back, remember that a lot of them lost relative seniority and their positions - including a whole lot of FL captains.so, yeah, they did a lot to make WN a successful airline. And WN is doing well.just don't forget who you had to step on to get where you (collectively) are.
Well this is rich coming from you , "can't leave well enough alone " . You do that every damn day !!! Typical internet troll mentality!!

indeed it is good news.

but the profit sharing doesn't seem quite as sweet given the backdrop of stagnant labor negotiations.

given all of WN's success at DAL which is clearly a factor in WN's profits, it is all the more difficult to understand why WN labor can't move forward.

corporate success rarely is lauded by employees who don't get to participate in it... as WN's profits grow and yet WN people's percentage of that success shrinks, it will be harder and harder for WN to keep its people loyal to it.

increases in compensation are clearly being used as tools to engage employees in the highly competitive industry. It is not hard to see that the more money that is thrown at employees, the more employee-related problems can be solved.
