"Kelly said Southwest won't buy any other airline but would be interested in acquiring US Airways' gates in Philadelphia if the bankrupt carrier were sold or liquidated."

"Southwest chief executive Gary Kelly said if the two carriers merged and shed 50 of US Airways' planes, it could represent the consolidation that many experts have long predicted for the industry."

"If US Airways Group Inc. and America West Holdings Corp. merged but still continued to operate all their current flights, that would be another setback for an industry already struggling with low fares and high fuel costs, said Gerard Arpey, the CEO of AMR Corp.'s American Airlines."

"shed 50 of US Airways' planes"

We're close if you include those already gone or slated to leave since we entered BK2 - 47 I think. According to some of the media reports, more are to leave the combined fleet.

I look for Southwest to get her PHL gates. I look for US/HP to share PHL with Southwest like HP does now in LAS and PHX. Major downsizing in PHL????

Maybe he means 50 more airplanes.

A distinct possibility....both that he meant that and that's what might happen.

WN is adding 34 aircraft in 2005 and 34 aircraft in 2006.
THEY have the balls to complain about overcapacity?

Its only overcapacity if its not YOUR planes flying. Note the comment by both AA and WN that the deal would be good for the industry IF US/HP pulled down THEIR flying.

AA has parked about 40 of it's planes in the desert for temporary storage. This does not include the planes it grounded permanantly and sold or returned to the lessors.

You'd think that parking 14 767s, 28 MD-80s, a handful of 757s, 30 717s plus 74 F100s in the past 3 years (as AA has done) would qualify as "capacity reductions." Not everyone agrees. 150+ or so fewer mainline jets looks like shrinkage to me. B)

There's plenty of domestic overcapacity, with B6 and WN expanding like mad since September 11. Since the likelihood of those airlines grounding airplanes is very remote, something's gotta give. Time to vote someone off the island. Seems sensible that WN would not choose itself.

We've lost 33% of our flying since September 11; 20,000 employees and these Texas a holes have the audacity to say US/HP should cut more so they can add more? WTF!

Don't forget the MD-11s, DC-10s, MD-90s, and 727s.

In addition to grounding all those AA planes listed above, AA has postponed new diliveries until about 2008, reduced one of it's hubs by 75% (STL) and has laid off about 40,000 employees. AA has done anything but add flights.

But in all that time you guys never filed Chapter 11. Perhaps when you've heard over-and-over again that your airline should "just die already" maybe you'll truly understand the plight of the US Airways employee.

I was pointing out that AA did not add planes as you inferred.
