What Was The Final Straw In Your Usairways Career

I missed the original post about the flight to Munich but can relate a similar experience from a passenger's perspective. I was at JFK shortly after DL bought Pan Am's operation on a flight to Frankfurt which went on to Bombay. One of the flight attendants (original Delta I think) called maintenance and told them one of the lavs was out of service. Maintenance came up and started to tape the lav closed and said they couldn't fix it right now. One of the pilots came back and said they were not taking that plane (a DL 767) without having the lav fixed since the plan was going all the way to India and had four flights before it got back to the US. A maintenance supv. came up (DL person - you could tell 'cause the PA people were still wearing their old uniforms) and said the lav would be fixed. It was and we left about 30 minutes late. I saw many similar things while flying Pan Am and saw the difference when Delta took over their operation.

Bottom line is that every company has a culture that trickles all the way down to every employee. It is very interesting to hear how many of you at US refuse to accept the cuts and lack of service you give because of cuts from the top. At Pan Am, the cuts had gone on for so long that most employees didn't even know what was supposed to be right. When you no longer know what is right, you are in trouble.

I must say that I flew Delta about a year later (after the DL takeover) from JFK to Berlin on an ex-PA A310 w/ an all ex-PA crew and was amazed at the difference. The flight attendant was the best I have ever had (in Business class) on any airline and exuded that sophistication and class of yesteryear.

By God's grace, many of you will end up at companies where you will get to use the skills you learned long ago but have had to slowly put on ice.
