This is when I knew my career was over at US Airways when they sent this 767 to Munich for us to work back to Philly. I will never forget the look on the passengers faces when they walked onboard.
Hope you are all hanging in there. Life on the outside is actually quite rewarding.

Best of luck to all of you.

The Final Straw In My Usairways Career

The first day I walked through the door was the final straw... I knew most of the people working there were losers.. I stayed for the time I did because I had friends who worked there, and the flight benefits were cool. I knew Uair would not be a place to build a career. The first thing I noticed was ineptitude of the senior managers and above. No vision, no people skills, no true business management talent. Senior mgmt were mostly kiniving people who were at least ambitious yet, at most barely competent to lead a team. Most managers were sheep, and change was never driven from the bottom where it should have been all along. Most Uair managers were to afraid to challenge their superiors, and that same philosophy slid right down hill to tier I analysts. Those who always said yes to their boss and did not create waves were promoted at a quicker pace, and everyone knew it. The best and brightest employees always left for better jobs outside the company. I saw USair turn great, highly motivated, talented people into 8 to 5 slaves, who only cared about collecting a paycheck. It's sad, and I knew even back then this company was destined for failure because it managed so poorly.

Nothing but the best at the carrier of choice...or is it chance? Although I'm no longer employed by US Airways, that is an embarassement. Even some totally ghetto "low cost" fly-by-night operators have better looking planes than that!

They say it's a crap shoot when you get hired by an airline. I was hired at USair in 1988, but didn't want to live where they wanted me to work. Said thanks but no thanks, and deceided to stay where I was. That was the best move I ever made. Good luck to all of you.

What got me to thinking I'd better get moving on a new career path was simple. A daughter in college. I needed a stable income stream that would keep her in school. After the first BK is when I began to really look. I wanted to stay in the aviation field so I began to look at the airport itself. Most of the folks I worked with, including myself thought the airport employees were knuckleheads. I also noticed they were happy and in talking with a few of them, they told me they had missed getting the cost of living raises only once in the last 20 years. A record U never had during my time there.

The "fun" had long since left the job I had. It went downhill after the mid 90's. The customers got worse, the management got even worse. Stupid rules and cuts in pensions, etc. made me think and think hard. The 1st BK just gave me the push I needed to make the jump.

I can not tell you how thrilled I am to still be at the airport, but working for folks who actually care what I say and do some of the things I suggest. I can make a difference in my life both here at work and in my paycheck. It's worth it's weight in gold.

What was my final "straw"? BK1.

Glad to hear it worked out for you....

Bet it's nice when you work with people who enjoy listening to you.

I don't know that felling, I'm still on the 'other' side.

Tell Jeff I said 'hey'...
