West to Take Over some East Flying

Stop treating west as though we have never seen a "difficult" passenger. Get real. West has been flying all over the country for many many years. Bin space? Try Orange County. Attitude? Try JFK. East hasn't had that special crowd yet, nor the special "JFK-LAS" crowd. West has dealt with it's share of tough passengers and our people are so laid back and easy going that it's never a big problem.

US Air/ways has served both JFK and SNA before.

And its the market being discussed, not the city. BOS-LAS is different than BOS-PHL just as LAS-PHX is different than LGA-DCA.

When USAir bought PSA it was the opposite... they forced east coast strategy on an unwilling California passenger base. Here we have a soutwestern leisure airline forcing thier 'cheap but better than Southwest' business casual mode onto a legacy carrier heavy on the east coast with a modest but growing international network.

Its what happens when little regionals become bigger players- they think what worked culturally in thier neck of the world translates onto the national or global level and it doesn't at all. Its not just airlines, other industries see this too. The best bet is to have a product that works for all unless you want to get into market segementation... that works for hotels, not so much for airlines. US tried it with MetroJet, the seperate Shuttle... Delta Song, Delta Express, Delta Shuttle, Shuttle by United, Continental Lite, etc etc. United is still giving it a go with Ted and P.S. service. Hard to maintain and operationally inefficient.

I dont have the answers. I just know that as an employee who spends more time with our customers than any other groups, what we are selling is not living up to the expectations of the buyer. When the profits go again, we'll be left with the pieces as usual.

I know the East has been doing some West Pairs for a while now, but noticed West taking over some East Pairs this Summer. While looking thru the July Schedule, I noticed that the 8:00am Departure out of EWR will now be done by a West A320. Flight 553 will operate EWR-CLT-PBI and 554 will operate PBI-CLT-EWR. I know the East is returning Aircraft, but does anyone know of other West flying or old East routes this Summer?

From the west Airbus bid I have seen SEA-PHL, PDX-PHL, ATL-PHL, DEN-PHL, SAN-PHL and SFO-PHL.

West flies from PDX to both CLT and PHL. Also, one DCA-CLT, CLT-LAS, CLT-PHX (westbound only) CLT-TPA and CLT-SAN in addition to the others mentioned above.

In addition to what others have said, east gets one DCA-PHX flight (westbound only) plus two PHX-SLC flights and the red eye from PHX-ORD. Couldn't find any PHX-SEA/DEN flights on east metal anymore.

As for LAS, east keeps the LAS-FLL/MIA runs but they only operate on Th/Fr/Su. West takes over the LAS-PBI flight which operates Mo/Th/Fr/Su. LAS-RDU is gone and both LAS-PIT flights have been downgraded from the 757 to A320 (still east metal).

I couldn't find where where west flies a PHL-BOS leg. Maybe I was looking at the wrong days or perhaps the schedule has been fully uploaded yet.

to travelpro72.... and for everyonoe else.. WN discontinued service between PHL-BDL a couple of months ago.. hmm we can beat them in the Northeast.. they drop service no one hears about it.. we drop service and its like we put our tail between our legs and run. thanks to that moron Dave Siegel whos famous statement was.. WN IS COMING TO PHL TO KILL US>> what a loser. we won in BDL we can win elsewhere and we obviously are because Tempe says we are making money. btw the people they fly PHl-MHT and PHL-PVD are a totally different animal. the PHL-BOS and shuttle to BOS are a very NEEDY animal and they would never put up with a WN product.

I always wondered why BOS PHL isnt officially part of the US Airways Shuttle... its pretty much hourly and the same clientele. I guess because it justifies larger aircraft? Ive worked it recently on the 757 and also the 190, maybe they dont make it Shuttle because it couldnt be all Airbus? I remember they added IAD to BOS or LGA as part of the Shuttle at one point but then pulled it.

in las big changes: the east will no longer have any morning flts until 1130am. PHl-ClT will be west. Also night flts going west will be PBI-MIA-FLL i believe. East gets the BOS. I believe this could lead to the company downsizing vegas to below minimum number of fls (69) for the east per week so they could be outsourced to the West. Theres been numerous problems with mgmt and FS fighting over who does what and when.
That would take a YEAR before they could do that. The way the Sand Castle is running this Company into the Ground, we might not be around in a year.

Amen to that EMBFA ... Let me know if you are selling popcorn, Boston is a needy crowd.. It should be interesting to see how they deal.

Are they any more needy than the SNA crowd? Those people bring on EVERYTHING but the kitchen sink and don't get me started on their "special" drink orders. Ugh! It will be interesting indeed, but not completely foreign to us.

So, I travel from BOS-LGA/PHL/PIT/DCA at last three times a week. I would not say that I am needy at all. I just want my bag to arrive with me, a drink (in a glass maybe), and to be at least close to 'on-time'. I don't think thats needy.

...and is not needy. Things can get out of perspective with the f/a's(I am a f/a.) as you've probably noticed, you take the good w/ the bad.
Good Luck.

Really? When did Southwest start Boston service??????

OMG everybody, Southwest flies to Boston!!!! And has for years without anyone noticing!?!
Ummmm...NO they don't...but they do fly to PVD and MHT. ;)

Lol... only Southwest refers to Manchester NH as "Manchester Boston Airport".... its 60 miles away!

I think people may be misinterpreting 'needy'. A better word would be 'expectations'. The old US Airways was the east coast, short haul airline. Aside from the hubs, it had the three focus cities, New York, Boston, Washington. Its hard to get slots at all three (LGA, DCA have slots, BOS is congested), and US was/is lucky enough to have tons of slots, whole terminals to itself in each, all the best facilities at each airport. Its also lucky enough to have the more established Shuttle.

Business travel certainly isnt what it was in 1999, but these are still routes used by business travelers. Very frequent travelers, some daily. Many that will pay that walk-up fare because they suddenly have to be in Midtown by noon, or on the Hill before three.

Business travelers can be great because they know the routine, enjoy a familar face, and are loyal. Or they can be condescending jerks who think they are the most important person on the airplane. Just like vacationers can be fun and laid back, or they can be drunk and unruly nightmares. They each have different expectations... all I know is my customers dont like "Here, Ill stuff your expensive coat behind a seat" or "Ill have to check your bag because theres an oxygen bottle and a bag of potato chips in the overhead." Or, "I have no idea when the aircraft comes in, the computer doesnt work", or "Oh I dont have a manifest so I actualy have no idea who is supposed to be in FC. But do you like my turtleneck and shorts?"
