Just read the article from Terry Maxon @ Dallas morning news that it looks like VA won the 2 gates at LF.  Sad for us here at SWA.  But I really thought we had a chance.  Now, let's sit back and watch the fare wars start at LF.    This could and will get very interesting.  The big media announcement is set for Friday morn...

Congrats to VX folks itll be interesting. Looks like DL got knocked down further
no. DL isn't getting knocked down. DL pursued a GROWTH opportunity that it still may or may not be able to complete... we still don't know if DL will be able to keep its current or planned schedule but even if DL has just 3 717 flights/day from DAL, that is more seats than it has now.

The party that is getting knocked down is AA which will have to deal with an airport outside of its reach where competitors can directly serve AA's top domestic markets.

WN will likely announce their schedules and fares from DAL within weeks if not days and the chances are very high that AA will have to reduce fares from DFW or face a mass exodus of traffic to DAL.

Given that WN already is the dominant or equal share carrier in EVERY market which they currently serve from DAL directly competitive with AA from DFW, those who argue that WN will have no impact on AA are simply in denial.

Yes Robbed.  Maybe not knocked down further, because even Delta knew they were not getting said gates at LF.  Just like Terry mentioned in his article that Delta "is not an appropriate divestiture candidate for the LF gates".

Terry is the only one reporting on this.  As usual he's the first called by many for local Dallas news.  Guess we'll hear more come Fri morn when VA makes it's "to discuss the future of our Dallas operations"  news conference slated at an undisclosed private aviation institution at LF.

Still wondering what SWA will do in response.  We already know what Delta will do, don't we?  If not, it is coming shortly and I am surprised it has not came yet.

WN will live with the gates it has. That is what it will do.

WN will also have to live with multiple competitors at what it thought was going to be its private airport.

Suppose the list of cities that WN was going to serve is a whole lot shorter?

Fair enough.    I see now that Maxon is adding more info that no decision has been made yet.  At this point I have no idea what the Fri morn announcement will be.  HOWEVER, a VA aircraft landed tonight at LF and taxied to said private aviation company where announcement and press release is to be held.  To me it appears VA is the winner and is setting up photo shoots for the press release announcement.  OR  VA flew in the A/C just in case they are the winners of the said announcement.  As we all know, SWA planes are already there as well as some of Delta's, maybe they are just getting prepared for a good photo opt if they are the chosen ones.  Remember, Maxon's original story did state "apparently" not definite.

City of Dallas is now saying that no decision has been made.  But why the landing of the VA airplane?  I am still saying the gates are going to VA, however, I would much rather SWA get them.  I am positive that Delta will not get them as per the DOJ quotes.  More than likely the DOJ has notified VA of the award, so they could very well set up this announcement at LF.  Why else would VA be renting all this space and bringing in an A/C???   I am very certain that VA is being awarded the gates.  If they go to SWA I will be very pleasantly surprised, and if Delta was to be awarded I would be shocked.  Lets all tune in tomorrow 8:45am...

the only certainties in this whole process is that WN WON'T be getting the two gates and that they WILL have to accommodate other airlines that want to serve DAL in order to keep both DAL airport and the DOJ out of a legal challenges regarding access to the airport.

So DL has mainline aircraft there as well? If so, then either DL is not as far out of the running as you think, DL has a deal to be accommodated, or DL intends to crash the party.

Remember the point of this exercise is not about 2 gates per se - it is about being able to serve DAL. DL operates into airports with non-preferential gates all the time.
WN might have to learn that it can achieve what it wants while still working within the facility constraints that existed long before Oct 2014.

swamt  your assessment sounds about right    why else would VX send a plane in other than to divert or on emergency   it sure sounds like DL got knocked down further   but of course we all know someone is quite upset over that

no, you are upset that I am NOT upset.

You can't get thru your head that DL is losing nothing in this deal. It is trying to serve routes it currently does not in someone else's hub. Even if DL is completely shut out and can't even operate 3 flights per day to Atlanta, the actual loss is minuscule; there is an opportunity lost for certain but DL can and is expanding in Texas regardless. The AUS-LAX flights are just the beginning of further focus on the LOCAL Texas market which DL has identified as a strategic area that will be developed in the coming years. It is still very likely that DL will grow from N. Texas regardless. You seem to forget that DL now has a 20% share of the LGA-DFW market already and isn't about going to see it diluted because Virgin and WN now decide to enter via DAL.

The loss is to WN for the gates that it won't gain IN ITS HUB and the smaller operation at DAL that it will have and to AA for having a lot more competition in its backyard which it cannot touch.

Lost in one of the 718 DAL-related threads, WT tossed out the idea of 3 717's/day exDAL for Delta. IMO, that's probably pretty close to what the end run will look like. Obviously a step up in capacity from the 2-3 CRJ's we use now, but nowhere near the "posturing" schedule DL threw out there a few months ago.

Just caught the press conference on the live video feed they provided...

Virgin says they've come to terms with American and the DOJ, and is now going to start selling tickets. (note to DL, that's how the process is supposed to work...)

All subject to the City's approval, but that seems to be on the City council agenda for Monday morning.

This month, Virgin America was selected by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) for the award of two Love Field gates being divested as part of the American Airlines/US Airways merger settlement. To announce the news today, the airline made a surprise landing with one of its custom-designed Airbus A320 aircraft at Love Field — where it is hosting an "open plane" event for media, Elevate® loyalty members, partners and social media fans.

Guess they just set the intro fare levels for WN.

as for you, 700, DL is winning because it is the largest revenue carrier from DFW to its major hubs at ATL, DTW, MSP, and SLC. DL still plays in the CVG and MEM to DFW markets even though both routes operate more like point to point routes - and yet DL gets a revenue premium to AA in those markets. Oh, and DL has a 20% share of the DFW-LGA market, similar to what VX has from DFW to LAX, a market that DL will very likely enter.

but this is about VX and WN and their efforts to redevelop their own longhaul domestic service from DAL.

Duh, of course they are strong to their fortress hubs.

Just as every other carrier is on their hub routes.

They arent winning the market share and not even close, they are behind the New AA and even NK.
